Post Your Craft/ Mission Names

What do you end up calling your ships? What code-names, or hilarious puns do you decide on when making a new ship? Do you create code-names for your missions, from some obscure mythology of your choice?

Currently I'm naming all my ships from Ossetian Mythology. So all my ships and missions have names like Sosruko, Setenej or Syrdon.

What's your influence? Post away!

I don't start naming them until I start orbital stuff. After that I use exciting names like:

Orbitals: "Orbital I," "Orbital II," etc.

Mun Missions: "Mun Flyby," Mun I," "Mun II," etc.

...and so forth. I name them after the body, numbered, and whether they're a "flyby" or lander, manned or not, etc.

Current mission set/program name: MULARV.

MUnar

Landing

And

Return

Vehicle

MULARV 7 just splashed down after exploring the Farside crater. MULARV 8 will likely be my final mission to the Mun. Then the MINLARV program will begin.

The name of the planet.

But not the kerbol system planet, its solar system counterpart.

And not the roman name, but the greek counterpart name: Ares (Athena to Ike), Hermes, Artemis, Zeus....

But when it's time to go to Eeloo, i'm sending the Cronos series spacecrafts: i don't want to send Uranus roaming free around the kerbol system, kerbonauts keep giggling at the name and get distracted from their job.

I have the least creative naming system in the world. I name them after the body they are going to, and then add "Lifter" at the end.

For example:

Mun Lifter

Duna Lifter

Laythe Lifter

Ike Lifter...

If I make more than one I add a number at the end:

Jool Lifter 2

Jool Lifter 3...

Sometimes I will name them after their function, though:

Slow Lifter (a plane for going slow in the atmosphere)

Tank Lifter (for lifting orange tanks into orbit)...

Not that creative.

I've classified ships by type lately in my last 2 career modes:

Antares - Kethane miner and transport

Rigel - Ore miner and transport

Artemis - Science lander probes

Orion - cruisers

Enterprise - carrier cruisers

Hermes - Landers without closed cans (you'd be surprised at how far a FL100 and that small rocomax single engine can take you when you don't have half a ton of lander can to carry around).

Sagittarius - freighters

Voyager - long range probes

Titanic - reusable ion drive transfer stages.

Oasis - Long range crew transport

Pegasus - short range crew transport

Most space stations get unique names

Regula - Stanford torus stations

Shipyard - shipyard stations

Base names:

Bases get unique names based on where they're based.

Unclassified ships get named after their purpose

Kethane and ore finder

It goes to the mun

etc

So far...

  • Flopnik - First satellite (along with Stayputnik, this was a derisive name give to the first failed US satellite attempt, Vanguard TV3)
  • Merkury - Suborbital and orbital one kerbal capsule flights
  • Semini - orbital one kerbal capsule, practice rendezvous and docking with one man capsules made it half or semi - Gemini, hence Semini.
  • Chell - Science collecting probe series, named for the protagonist of the "Portal" game series.
  • Kurveyor - Surveyor type landers sent to the Mun.
  • KUR-700 - UR700 launcher and moon mission later renamed...
  • Diana - Kerbaled Munar landing missions - based on Soviet "plan B" to land on the moon, one BIG ship lands, then launches back to Earth, no docking in orbit.
  • SPARTA - Science Platform And Roving Terrain Assessment, a series of landers with rovers to find good landing spots for Diana/Leto landers, developed after Diana one nearly falls over upon landing.
  • Leto - Apollo style (orbital docking, separate lander and command ships) lander for the Mun, named for Diana's mother in greko-roman mythology (yes I know I switched cultures with the names)
  • V'Ger - single probe sent to Jool on a science collecting flyby. Vanished, possibly into a black hole, after leaving Kerbol's SOI.

I'm really dull, but I have too many designs to have non-descriptive names:

Destination(if only one) Usage Version or constellation number

Mun-ScanSat-High-3

Lay-ScanSat-Low-1

Dun-Lander-1

Min-KethDrill-1

or

Type-Usage-Version

SP-3man-5 (spaceplane)

SP-Cargo-3

Station-Fuel

Tug-Fuel-LongRange

Rover-LowGrav

In my current play-through, my space-faring Kerbals are descended from viking raiders that conquered the seas, so I'm using mostly Norse mythology names for missions and ships.

Interplanetary probes have been named "Loki #", Loki 1 is heading to Moho, Loki 2 is heading to Dres. Loki 3 will [hopefully] be heading to Jool soon. My manned interplanetary ships & missions are labeled "Thor" missions. Falcon heavy-like lifter is "Mjolnir". My new super-heavy lifter with the new 3.75m parts and SRBs I titled the "Surtur I". I expect to see later "Surtur" models with increased launch capacity.

My station in LKO is named "Midgard". The station around Minmus is named "Bifrost", since it's intended to be the stepping off point for my manned IP missions, like the bridge linking Midgard to Asgard. Manned asteroid missions are "Fenrir #" & a probe asteroid missions are "Hati #". I've had "Freya" landers for the Mün and "Jotun" for Minmus landers. My Kerbal moving SSTOs are named "Slepnir". I think my science SSTO is going to be either "Huginn" or "Muninn".

I branch out a bit from this, too: I thought my trainer aircraft I built were just ugly, so I used the "Grendel" tag for them. I use a pair of nuke ferry's to move kerbals around the Kerbin system and since "Ferry" sounds like "Faerie", I named the "Puck 1" & "Puck 2". I expect to have "Titania" and "Oberon" interplanetary shuttles, as well.

I also tend to stick to similar designs with iterative revisions, so I use a lot of "M#A#" suffixes for these, too. I think the Slepnir is actually an M1A4 at this point.

My imagination is GREAT! just GREAT! Most of my ships end up having a very long name, reduced into letters, for example:

Joolian System Atmospheric and Radiation Scanner Probe = JSARSP

And then i add the mission number: JSARSP I, JSARSP II, etc...

And maybe i even name them mixed, for example:

Very Heavy and Manouverable Combat Aircraft Purple Butterfly: VHMCA Purple Butterfly MK.I

:P
