So my MacAfee trial is running out tomorrow on my new pc... I need some new antivirus that is free but good and not a bunch of ad ware. I used to have AVG which was good except for the ad ware.

I use Microsoft security essentials and Ccleaner. The main question is: How many questionable sites do you access a day, and how much do you download weekly? You may need something more depending on how good you are about spotting questionable content on the fly.

avast! is good. No adware as far as I know.

I'm hesitant to recommend Avast!, while it does seem very effective the software is very annoying and high profile, it tries very hard to ensure you pay attention to it even when trying to uninstall it, it's very clingy.

I cannot say the same. The only times I notice it's even there is when I get the occasional warning pop up. And on other computers, it wasn't as ''clingy'' as you describe it.
