RCS thrusters control?

Recommended Posts

Is there anyway to control what commands the RCS ports follow? For example, I would only want them using "I" and "K" while letting the rest to the reaction wheel.

Unfortunately the only way to do this is to use the single direction RCS thrust ports. I think they are listed as the Place-Anywhere 7 Linear RCS Port. It only works in one direction and is pretty much what you are looking for.

I certainly agree that it would be very nice to be able to configure the RCS to only work for translations, or at least make translation RCS "always-on." It never fails that you turn RCS on for translations, and then you want a rotation and it uses RCS because you haven't toggled it off yet. A lot of unnecessary toggling IMO

In the stock game RCS is either on or off. Even if you use the single way linear port, it may still get used for rotation depending on where they are.

There are some mods that will do what you want. I believe MechJeb has this setting. I'm not sure if the RCS Build Aid has this option or not.

Ideally we should be able to tweak which ports are used for which control inputs, similar to control surfaces.

I'm a MechJeb user, I take advantage of the setting Claw mentions that uses RCS for translation and reaction wheels for attitude control. Saves on monopropellant, I can dock most reasonably sized ships with what's carried in the control pod.

I usually do that: 2 row of RCS (linear) one perfectly centered on the CoM, the second row will be offset. Then I configure an action button to "toggle" off the second row of RCS.

That way, even with SAS, you won't consume monoprop (depending of your precision when placing the first row on the CoM) cause you can disable the rotation RCS.

When you need a boost for rot, just toggle on the rotation rcs.
