Procedural Planets

Recommended Posts

Hi there,

it's been a long time since I last posted something on this forum, so here is my first activity after one year!

Please Note that this suggestion is not meant for any update that will be released soon, it is meant for the future.

Have you ever noticed how boring it is to visit the same celestial bodys again and again?

Well, did you ever think how awesome it could be to visit procedural planets?

You could play kerbal space program for ever, start a new campaign and write your own story about your star system!

I think this idea could be used for the last big update in ksp. What do you think about this idea, would you like to see something like that in this amazing game?

Thanks for reading through,

-Blues.

The devs (and Harv specifically) have said they aren't going to implement procedural (which doesn't mean what you think it means*) planets.

*technically, right now, all planets are already procedural. They just have the same seed every time. The Mun craters are procedurally generated, but always appear at the same place. The word you're looking for is 'random'

Technically only the Mun benefits the procedural crater generation right now.

I don't know if the KSP API allows to touch planetary data (it should seeing the RSS mod), but a procedural terrain details generation on existing planets, and procedural planets generation for new system may be created as a MOD.

They won't because they want everyone to have the same experience while playing the game. They want people to say 'look how beautiful Jool looks!' and other players can go there and see for themselves. Or they want players to share their super awesome Duna lander but if everyone has different Dunas, it might not work.

That's not to say I agree with them mind you - FWIW, I'm with you, it'd be a great addition to the game. Instead of saying 'look how beautiful Jool is!', you'd say 'look how beautiful Jool is on seed #4839657!' or whatever. The game would always start on a default seed, the same for everyone, or you're given the option to change it when you start a new game.. there's been a lot of discussion on this in the past, some very interesting points were raised.

You can have procedural and the same seed on every PC. SpaceEngine does this IIRC. It seeds the entire known universe, and each PC is able to visit every star (though you'd need a LOT of time to do so. ;) ). It's just each PC has the same seed, so they generate the same universe. But it's a loooong way away before Squad do alternative solar systems (if ever). At which point they decide on a few hand made ones, or limitless (though the same on each pc/game) seeded/procedural ones.

Well, this feature has two sides. A good one, and a not so good one.

The good one is, you can have much more fun, and get more excited when starting into a new career.

The not so good one is, you can't share your amazing sights with your friends / other people.

A solution could be (as mentioned before), seed generated star systems.

The solar system has already been revised several times, and it's probably not in its final form yet. And therefore, requests/suggestions for additional or alternate worlds have been placed on the list of things it is or premature to discuss yet. or have simply been discussed to death already. We'll be closing this thread now in the interests of keeping forum discussions moving on more productive lines.
