Aedile
(Formatting mine). Are you seriously accusing Majiir of profiting from ModStatistics?Half the stuff it collects is rather useless. It's like the neighbor granny tracking what you do. Which honestly annoys me even more. Personally I don't care why he or anyone would need that info. What I know is, I won't let it exist on my machine.
DerekL1963
Still no excuse for it, it makes you look bad man. You are free to leave the messages and passive aggressive attacks in your post and code...just know it makes you look childish. If you don't want to use this mod, please stop clogging up the thread for those of us who do. It's not your business what we do or don't do or how we go about it - and it's certainly not for you to dictate to us how to behave.
Dodgey
I asked this on the ModStatistics thread but I won't be getting an answer there anytime soon and I am genuinely curious about this as well.I'm assuming that the main contention to this mod comes from people not being aware that they were installing it. To wit I have two questions.1. Did you read the thread post of the original mod which you downloaded to check to see if something important had changed, like the implementation of ModStatistics?2. If so, was there a notice of such about the inclusion of ModStatistics into the download? If you answered no to the first and yes to the second (if you have gone back and checked) then it is your fault for not understanding what you were downloading. I.e. you downloaded something without checking what was in it first. If the answer to the second question was no then the fault lies with the mod author for not including information about ModStatistics in their thread post.Majiir has provided more than enough information in the first post of this thread for anyone to be able to opt out, as well as instructing any modders who are including this mod in their download to declare so.Again I'm not saying this with any contentions I genuinely want to know. Any data collection being opt-out in the first place is unacceptable. It needs to be opt-in, and people need to stop bundling it with everything - ie, it needs to be opt in such that the end-user has to explicitly download it himself (not bundled into another mod and just mentioned in a changelog) to opt into data collection. Dred_furst
One think I was wrong in this is that you don't even have to not install the DLL. A single cfg and you're opt-out. And you? Well, you made a whole C# Project (which by the way looking at the code, I don't really know how you know if ModStatistics is installed or not) to achieve this "delete the DLL" thing. Also, good luck in finding back the computer that is linked to the GUID. The only reason this is created is to have a way to identify the data (and not the guy or the computer) that comes in, and successfully gather statistics. Also, Anonymous: Not identified by a name. So {50fea-dthrj-3d21t-dgf32} is truly anonymous, along with the data the comes with it. Even SolarLiner is anonymous technically (except if you search it I guess you'll easily find who I am and coarsely where I live). It makes sense, too, because else even the ID that is linked to your account right here on the KSP forums would be a violation of the law somehow.Signing up to the forum is an opt-in process. Mod statistics is not.Ok I've just changed my name to {50fea-dthrj-3d21t-dgf32}. Is {50fea-dthrj-3d21t-dgf32} a name?my computer has a name.my network has a namemy network also has an ip address as well as a namemy house has a name/number. case in point: I'm going to call you bob. bob is your name. I don't care what your actual name but every time I see you you are bob to me. Am I identifying you by name?edit: if you are being really dense, the problem with anonymous data is that it shouldn't be identifyable. the problem around anonymizing things is around identity not naming. If you think otherwise, you are a cretin. sorry. Edited July 20, 2014 by Dred_furst
trnt
So, why is this required? If "without users' notification" is the problem, just notifying people is enough, not giving a new mod to disable Modstatistics, because there already is option to disable Modstatistic. If don't want to send some information, we can turn it off with cfg file. If don't know how to open cfg file, we can ask online (even seaching "how to open cfg files" on google gives answer). If just hate Modstatistic ITSELF, or cannot trust disabling option, we can remove all mods that contain Modstatistics. Is there anything I know incorrectly? What I know is, I won't let it exist on my machine. Each to their own; I have no problem with ModStatistics or people who want to disable ModStastics. But I do have a problem with accusations that, in some jurisdictions, would be considered libelous.

It's not your business what we do or don't do or how we go about it - and it's certainly not for you to dictate to us how to behave.Nor is it your business how I behave nor for you to dictate how I do...right. So WHAT exactly was the point of your post? I was having a discussion with the OP which had nothing at all to do with you. I pointed out earlier that his passive-aggressive attacks were childish, OP came back with the excuse that he was in the bottle when he did it. My response was nothing more than the truth in my opinion...which I'm free to right?!If you don't like it...you could do the same that you want me to do and just keep your keyboard still huh? somnambulist
Thanks for the feedback! I've published 1.1 with revised wording- let me know if it still makes me look childish, I really value your opinion! You really should strike this entire line, "Being told you should just go through every mod you download to check it for crapware, or 'just write a script to delete it and launch KSP'". It's possible to lay out a case for why someone would want to disable ModStatistics by installing your mod without needing to use a pejorative like "crapware". Something like, "Being required to manually delete usage reporting software bundled with some mods." is faaaaar less inflammatory while still conveying what you're trying to prevent. It needs to be opt-in, and people need to stop bundling it with everything - ie, it needs to be opt in such that the end-user has to explicitly download it himself (not bundled into another mod and just mentioned in a changelog) to opt into data collection. How is having to download it separately any different from downloading it with another mod. Assuming information is given letting the user know what they are downloading. If the information is made open to the user, say on the first thread post in the change log, then it is up to the user to understand what it is they are downloading.so why does it need to be separate? Is it because people don't read the entire change log or relevant documentation? Or because they don't want to opt out after downloading it? Honestly I can't think of another reason.Edit,Guys we have already had one thread locked over this, let's not make it another.
