So i was testing a small plane to see how tight i can make it turn i then pulled up and got it stuck in an infinite stall .... It wont slow down or fall its just moving forward at 9 m/s XD

Edit: Actually its impossible to stall it even if you at 90 degrees !?

What's causing this bug? A simple physics engine would calculate the forces on an object, then from those forces, calculate the accelerations/velocities/position changes. All I can think of is somehow the engine is glitched such that the force vectors from air friction or something are pointed in the wrong direction and actually giving you propulsion?

EzinX,

You're assuming the stock drag model makes sense. :sticktongue:

Short version: drag in stock is basically proportional to (atmospheric density * vehicle mass * velocity^2). There's no accounting for shape or orientation. As a result, control surfaces also don't work as expected. Instead of changing the shape of the wing or tailplane, they produce magical anti-deflection forceTM. This force is produced opposite the deflection direction regardless of airspeed or direction.

In other words, montyben101's plane is flying by flapping the control surfaces. The part we're surprised about is that it's sustaining altitude and speed all by itself.

You can fix this problem with FAR or NEAR. Stock Drag Fix also makes some less game-changing improvements, though it does nothing about infinigliders.

@Nikola7007 no i can turn it and move it about but it just stalls infinitely

@ Fueniker S. Its KSC++ from lack luster labs , scroll down and click on the spoiler named KSC++

@Master Tao Actually im not flapping the wings! im not doing anything! sas is just keeping it pointed up and it just keeps going!!!

If SAS is turned on then I'll bet it's flitting them ever-so-slightly to keep that nose-up heading. With the number of surfaces on it it's probably enough all by itself.

(careful with the critisisms of the aero model, "The Cult of Squad" seem to be especially touchy on that subject :P)

Actually there IS some accounting for shape and orientation in stock, but only of lifting bits. It also does take into account airspeed - you can't start infinigliding from a zero velocity, you need at least a little (rolling down the runway slowly or being dropped from a launch clamp is sufficient though). I suspect the real problem with infiniglide is that the forces are not in balance. That is, when it's adding lift forces to the craft, it's not adding in an equivalent drag, so the vectors add up to a speed increase...or something like that.

I'm stalking your posts about control surfaces! Muahaha! ...Just kidding :)

Yeah, SAS is always doing minor corrections, so it's definitely twitching those surfaces.

Figured as much.

What do you mean by the cult of squad? People who play stock or the devs?

Those who beleive Squad is faultless and Harvestr walks on water. They're a little bit like Appelites, the Brethren of Linux, or followers of "The Word of Nintendo". Irritating, but mostly harmless :sticktongue:

Ew. The Minecraft community has that too - The Notch Defense Force. I love Squad for bringing us KSP, but they are most certainly not faultless and Harvestr does not walk on water (unless he has some.. boat shoes?).

:)

I'm going to post this here, because it's one of my best videos. If you don't watch until the end, you're missing out. No, seriously.

The third way to abuse infinigliders is possibly one of the best things I've ever seen in KSP. You think that your infiniglider is extreme... :D
