List of No-Brainer Mods that should become stock

Recommended Posts

My list:

Home Grown Rocket Parts

-This one should have been in stock from the very beginning. It's a pack of stockalike 1.875 meter parts, bridging the gap between 1.25 and 2.5 meter parts. Not to mention, it's got a stockalike Gemini-style capsule and an entire Soyuz stockalike launch system, fairing, escape tower, and even a Shenzou styled orbital module as an alternative to the Soyuz-styled one.

Kerbal Attachment System

-This just fits with KSP so nicely. It gives EVA an actual purpose with the ability to grab small parts such as RCS blocks and reattach them in other places. No longer will a ship that lacks a docking port be useless when it runs out of fuel. Not to mention, the idea of moving things about with tethers and refueling them with fuel lines is just so intuitive.

-Some kind of payload bays. Kind of like the Spaceplane Plus MK2 Payload Bay, but made for the MK3 body, and the 2.5 meter body and other sizes.

-Deadly Reentry, but with an option to disable/reenable it, if you don't want it in a save file.

-A better aerodynamic model, but not as advanced as FAR. At the same time, it would be awesome to have a deorbited station break up and seperate modules during re-entry.

-An extension of the physics loading range in-atmosphere. It's very frustrating having other ships vanish 2.5 kilos away without a trace.

Speaking of aerodynamics, where do I find the NEAR mod? I'm having no luck.

I wanted to compile a short list of mods that i think should become stock in the game, and wanted to get the community's input.

(1) Just like X cuts engine power, Z should floor it (like the FloorIt mod)

(2) When in "surface" mode on the NAVball, the altimeter should display altitude above surface, not above sea level (i think this makes intuitive sense). There is no mod i am aware of that currently does this.

(3) Even without part-pack mods, there are too many redundant items to choose from in the VAB/SPH, and requires scrolling through sheets and sheets of parts. Instead, each part should really be a catagory, and the specifics can be changed later via tweakables. For instance, the number of tank parts can be reduced to one by making diameter and aspect ratio "tweakable" parameters (the available options of which are unlocked with the tech tree). Thus, you only have one fuel tank, and you can use tweakables to make the aspect ratio and diameter that you want. Similar things can happen for decouplers (just diameter) and landing gear (just "size"), so you only see one part in the part list, but can change its size with a tweakable. Solar panels and batteries as well. Thus, each part in the part list is more like a "category" rather than an exact part itself. This feature will also make it easier to modify existing designs without having to detach and delete parts since you can simply change the tweakable on the existing part.

(4) All wings should include tweakables for fuel, solar panel covered area, and heat shields (the tweakable list might depend on if the relevant mods are installed). All fuel tanks should include tweakable for solar panels and heat shields (heat shields in particular).

(5) by default, the game should not let you warp past a maneuver node; it should automatically cancel time warp (similar to what Kerbal Alarm Clock does, but without having to set an alarm or download a mod; if you think about it, adding a maneuver node should mean you automatically dont want to time warp past it). Similarly, the game should not let you warp past SOI changes (since they mess up accuracy; alternatively, they should fix the root cause of the inaccuracy upon warping through SOI changes).

(1) Agree

(2) Disagree - Although I think it would be nice if you were able to upgrade to some tech that told you your distance from the surface, like a laser measure or something that you could strap to your vehicle and get an extra readout.

(3) I disagree. I understand why the poster above is asking for this, but I disagree. I think parts organization is important, but what I want is MORE PARTS! Lots of parts! The original poster above wants to clear clutter and build a spaceship of their own design, period. I get that. - I want to be a kid with blocks, slapping them together to build neat things. Also, I feel like the set parts are from different manufacturers. While of course we could get custom made parts, I like the feeling that "X-Company Produces This Model Part" ... and, "So how are you going to use it?" - Also, I love the feeling of, "Ooooowww, I just unlocked bigger fuel tanks. Muahahahaha." - While if I could build a fuel tank of any size, I wouldn't get that feeling.

(4) The idea that solar panels might become part of a wing at higher tech levels seems like a really cool idea (if that's what they're saying, otherwise I still think its a cool idea and I'm going to say it.), but I don't think people should be able to turn any surface into solar panels as soon as solar tech is discovered. Blockly solar panels, then the ones that expand, like we have now, all cool as is. - Maybe I don't understand this one, but... Meh.

(5) Totally agree! We should be able to set a default somewhere that stops the warp, or perhaps it stops the warp based on scale. Actually, the ability to set the stop time when we set the node would be perfect.

I think you misunderstand what i was saying. You wouldnt be able to build any size fuel tank, but rather, it would simply reduce the number of parts appearing in the parts list. The tweakables would allow you to select discrete values of 1/2m, 1m, 2m, 3m etc... but not define the diameter yourself continuously. Thus, it would be a way of arranging/organizing parts, rather than an actual change to gameplay...
