Post your spaceplane fleet

Recommended Posts

I can build awesome aircraft but I've never made an SSTO.

SSTO spaceplane is pretty easy really, rapiers are your friend and so are nuclear engines for once you are in orbit :)

Don't bother mixing in turbo jets and aero spikes, just makes things too complicated to start off with, really it is getting fuel flow right so the centre of mass does not change that is the biggest problem (ya wana be able to land the thing after you de orbit after all lol)

OK, here goes, and for the sake of brevity I'll only post the spaceplanes that are still in active service, as all of these have their own full pages .

Thunderlane Mk-5

Ik2Ot7s.png

seen here after delivering two nuclear engines to a tug. It handles most of my 1.25 meter part deliveries.

Kylon-1

mXi0m1N.png

Seen here doing a space probe launch and crew transfer mission. It handles shorter 2.5 meter cargoes and various other things. Can lift 19 tons.

Kylon-2

TJWIp65.png

NFZI9Rc.png

Seen here delivering a full orange tank and a tug core. Handles the heaviest and longest cargoes in my fleet.

Thunderlane mk-6

TPh95dt.png

Done mostly for aesthetics, but handles smaller cargo. rarely in use.

Fluffles Mk-4 (right) and Mk-4C (left)

the mk-4 is my laythe shuttle, ferrying crew from orbit to the surface of laythe and back, the mk-4C is a cargo variant for small cargo.

These are just a few of my designs that I would or still do use to this day. I have some new ones I have been working on but not quite happy with yet. I think in total I have made over 125 different SSTO space plane designs.

And my current project for my .24 install with the new B9 parts.

SP-12 Light load hauler.

I have to fix the RPM faults with that cockpit but that is minor work I will get to over the next week or so.

Developed from an SSTO that was designed for Kerbin orbit only, the addition of a vertical engine allowed this little fella to get to the Mun or Minmus. Due to the small tank, it needs to refuel before leaving Kerbin orbit, but that's all part of the fun.

Nice.

Creative use of the tail pieces, there. Much prettier than most stock-part planes.

Debug menu clipping for the intakes, or just careful fiddling?

Don't we have a shiny (and huge) SSTO showcase thread already?

Rune. Lag probably would exclude me from putting ALL my models on the same runway.

:D

We do, but I can post in that one but not in this. I don't really have a fleet, just a disparate collection of stuff made up as I go along. I quite like a fleet with an over-arching design philosophy or a range of abilities across the board to cover all eventualities.

Last time we got a thread like this I got a quarter of the way in before my game crashed. I gave up. Check out my sig for my craft. Lulz

Unfortunately it needed clipping switched on. Those tail pieces can be a 'mare to fit at the best of times.

No shame in a bit of aesthetic clipping; been known to use it myself occasionally. :D

(yes, I know it's not a spaceplane. But it is a 100% recoverable SSTO...)

This is the common spaceplane platform that I use in career mode. It was originally intended to be a light science lander (max. weight 10t fully fuelled) that you would attach to your interplanetary ship and land wherever you were going. (The science lander version is capable of landing on any planet in the Kerbin system except Eve and Tylo - and Jool obviously)

From there came a number of variants:

- Science lander (for 100% recovery - has science jr, thermometer, seismic monitor, barometer, gravioli detector)

- Jet version (for atmospheric testing of small parts, and exploring Kerbin's biomes) (the jet version is capable of reaching orbit)

- 2 seat version (just the thing for Jeb to terrorize the new guys -- and the occasional rescue mission)

- Ion drive version (for longer trips)

- Floatplane version (capable of landing and taking off from any watery surface)

Here's some pictures of testing around the system (you may have seen a few of these before in other threads)

So I just started building and using SSTO's and planes about 2 weeks ago... I'm one of the SP+ converts. When SP+ was announced that it would be added to the stock game and started getting some extra attention I downloaded it. And was pretty much hooked from there...

I then downloaded the B9 preview pack... and now their release pack.... it's all over now. Also after reading up on how to build SSTO's and how stock KSP handles atmosphere and drag I decided to check into FAR and NEAR. I went with NEAR and am very happy with with KSP and SSTO's now.

Before I installed NEAR I had 2 or 3 SSTO's that could make it to orbit with any real operational value other than station crew transfers and orbital rides. So that being said... I've pretty much mothballed most of my old SSTO's... I'm going to go through each one, resign them and start testing as time permits.

First up... The "Zenth"

WlM0ZmL.png

It's a flying wing style design... still in testing to see what it can really do and haul...

Love the look from the back....

8eKG9ym.png

It's super sleek, and so far loaded with full fuel, and 3 cube satellites it launches and climbs like a champ. Lift off using around 60% throttle (it gets a little hard to keep it straight at full throttle), Climb out on full throttle at 35* nose up it reaches 20k at about 4mins. at that point I shut down the secondary engines and let the main one burn in air breather mode till it automatically switches to closed cycle mode around 50k. From there it's a short burn to 75k, then around a 275-300dv burn to circularize. Leaving me around 1200dv to use as I need.

I've only done 2 launches with the Zenth so far. One was at half fuel and no cargo... strictly a test flight. The Zenth preformed flawlessly... well almost. Found out that at lower or no throttle yaw control was nill... had to mouse click the spoilers in different combinations most of the way down, so on her second flight I added a set of small winglets to control yaw. But I'm going to play around with spoilers and action groups to see if I can make it work and get rid of the winglets again. She also needs a lot of attention on the way down, she doesn't really seem to like to stop flying.

Jeb checking on the payload before launch...

And a orbital shot...

I have plans to add a robotic arm and to do a stretched version to.
