Duna Constellation mission pack. First V.10 rebuild craft pics (Altair lander)

Recommended Posts

Wow that's an awesome build, I really like what you've done with the stock parts - very creative. I know the rovers and command modules are based on actual NASA hardware, but what about the landers? I've seen similar designs from KSP somewhere else but I don't think I've ever seen anything like that in the actual Mars exploration architecture.

Good Job!

Those were (one of the) baseline landers for the Constellation Reference Missions. They were supposed to fit in heatshields/fairings sized for the Ares V and make full use of the surface area in that big honking shroud to make a lifting body reentry at Mars. Probably the iffiest thing more subject to change in the whole iffy and tenuously planned thing (Constellation was first supposed to build a Moon base, do you see that happening soon?), but a cool video and some computer graphics were done, and it's the one that has taken to popular media lately.

I may or may not have been looking into proposed Mars landers lately, and conic and bi-conic capsules have dominated that design in general, with a few low-density cylinders like habs here and there, but heatshield diameter has always been a serious limiting factor... unless you assume heavy supersonic retropropulsion use. Now I've got to figure out how to put a decent surface mission package inside a 3.75m radius heatshield (fortunately in KSP I don't worry too much about terminal velocity and Duna's gravity well). This way all that surface hardware can be MUCH cooler and complicated.

Rune. Time for some rover miniaturization and clever packaging!

Flaps!!! You've put flaps on the sides of the rovers!

Sorry, I've been trying to figure out how you got that shape with stock parts and what those square panels where. Flaps! cunning.

I think you've got the likeness very well on them.

LOL! yeah The flaps are really versatile for small builds!

Yup as Rune said the landers are my version of the proposed landers from the constellation mission

.

Check out the video, its great.

And thank you!

This is really awesome! Gz

What's the total weight of the aeroshell structure?

Thanks!

You know, I've never checked how much they weigh. *checks* Ok the Duna ascent aeroshell that lands first weighs 46.59t

And the crew lander aeroshell weighs 44.42t.

So, quite close then. They are very part heavy though.

Have you found the problem yet Majorim? If yes, tell me, if no, the SPR rover MAY be causing the problem.

Hey man,

The .25 update changed all the surfaces in the game and the SPR rover looked like a hedgehog..

I was going to update the aeroshell landers fairing to the new wing surfaces but early Duna tests showed they don't work as well as the panel fairing I have now so I wont change them.

All I need to do now is remake the SPR rover and add them to the craft. Will try to do It today so the pack is up and running again.

Thanks for the reply!

MJ

Darn..

You must spread that rep...

I am planing a full mission, first launch is done, doing second now!

Sorry about that...

My computer never loaded so I tried 3 times... I guess it worked...

Lol, no worries man.

I am very happy to see you are taking on this challenging mission! There's a reason so few people have attempted this, its a VERY tough mission to design realistically! As I know too well, it nearly killed me.

Do you have any pics of your craft?

I'm now working on a Konstellation Duna craft now, thanks to your's (and katetochi's) magnificent designs.

The first part of the mission failed because of docking issues. I'm trying gain tomorrow. Curse you you silly large SR docking port...

Hmm, what issues did you have?

Part Count Lag... Lots and lots of Lag. But that was ok, since I use Overfloater's Astroliners...

I sometimes have a glitch where docking ports don't connect, and that happened... Oh well

I'm confused.. You used Overfloaters Astroliner for a.. Constellation mission. How does that work?

They mean they are used to lag, because they use overfloater's 1,500 part crafts.

Riiight. I see. Yeah the game needs a serious physics update.. I remember the pleasures of placing both of my Constellation landers next to each other in orbit..

This was around 1400 parts on screen:

Modern GPUs can throw around hundreds of thousands of physics objects @ 60fps.. This is why KSP will never reach the giddy heights it aspires to.

We are just too limited with what we can put onscreen at one time. Its getting dull..
