Faces - Triangles versus Quads

Recommended Posts

I am a modeling newbie, and I googled this question. Blender allows me import .MU files. I noted that all models use triangle faces versus quads. In other games' modeling, I see this is the case as well.

Why the preference for triangles over quads? I know there must be a darn good reason for triangles. Please educate me.

thanks

I think the answer is that video cards do their rendering via triangles. A triangle will always perfectly appear in a single plane, whereas a quad isn't guaranteed to do so. However, a quad can always be broken down into triangles to achieve basically the same thing.

triangle is the simplest polygon, everything is triangulated in a game engine. it's under the hood. nothing you can do about it.

...But you should still model things using quads as much as possible. It makes the process much easier and let's you create neater geometry ICYDK.
