K-29B bomber + Y-38 fighter (stock props)

Ok, i added the new Y-38 Thunder to the first post :) (so now, the K-29 can have something to escort it :P)

K-29B soon, with the new engines to power it (and modified control surfaces, so less trim is required).

Well, it seems great minds think alike. Now, how viable would be a single-engine plane? I imagine the torque can be kept in check with more reaction wheels on the plane and/or aerodynamic trim in the roll axis?

Rune. You know, only the K-51D should have the range to follow these things at their extreme range. ;)

well, the new engine is pretty low torque compared to the early designs :) even the limiters can be countered with just roll control surfaces trimming :) (though the engine would be hard to streamline - unless we increase a bit the rest of the plane's body :P)

Well, it's not really a K-drive :) without the control surfaces at the front, it would be just rolling on itself :P (and they would be not suitable at high altitudes - the lower drag would let the propeller turn faster - until it destroys itself :P)

Though from some researches on alternatives to torque based engines, i did managed to create a low thrust landing gear based K-drive that works in space :)

To Rune:

Well, i finished a biplane that runs on a a single engine. The torque isn't too bad with SAS on. Pictures when i get home!

Well done! I am much too swamped with other stuff (see the WiP thread) to mess up with this right now, so it'll be nice to see how that looks.

Rune. Looking forward to it!

So here it is!

A bit late, but oh well!

Javascript is disabled. View full album

As you can see, it is a biplane with 1 engine.

.craft file!

Enjoy!

-EDIT-

To fly this craft, follow these instructions.

=IMPORTANT=

Do not switch to ANYTHING before decoupling the propeller. Do this by pressing space.

Then, you EVA the kerbal, get him in the seat, activate SAS, and press space.

The pod should fly away.

switch to the propeller and then hold ALT+E until the trim is full.

Then switch back to the plane. To take off, hold S and wiggle side to side using Q and E.

The first stock propeller planes only had a single engine as I was trying to get it to even fly. The early propellers were very unstable and couldn't produce enough thrust to takeoff (back in 0.21). After the reaction wheels got buffed again (0.24), I was finally able to get the plane to takeoff. Unfortunately, my lack of experience in wheel bearings meant that they only had rudimentary "dry" bearings, which were much more unstable than the current ones by Sgt_flyer. Nonetheless, it does work, but the propeller would jam if it went too fast or too slow but can usually be unjammed by briefly rotating the propeller the opposite direction. I can post the lastest prototype with Sgt_flyer's latest dry bearing and the original craft.

I have to say, what has been built here is purely excellent! I think this may usher in even more new building techniques using these tactics for different uses than shown here. For example, how long until a helicopter comes along?

shameless self promotion

Alright, I may have just used your engine and changed the rotor to make a flying, but uncontrollable electric helicopter.

And this may have happened too.

Yeah, the engine is brilliant that with a few more modifications I could potentially make a controllable helicopter running on just electric power. Of course, I'll have to make the rotational power of the main engine stronger and give the rotor more lift while also making it capable of adjusting orientation when I pitch or bank the helicopter, and build a smaller version for the tail rotor. But this may be achievable, and soon stock electric helicopters may become normal among forum users.

Also, for the near future, I have an idea to us the cargo bay opening device for something else (not saying yet).

Why did I find this thread-I have homework!

Unfortunately, the addition of the new control surfaces broke it. (The new control surfaces are too much different and way less effective than the old ones) haven't even got the courage to check on how much damage did the updates ;)

good thing I have a .23 install somewhere:D

I built a test bed based on your design and did some ground tests and it seems that the top speed has dropped from 55+ m/s to 45m/s

Just to notify you, your Y-38 is pretty much dead now as the bearing will break suddenly for no reason during climb-out...

Well, all the wings and control surfaces used to make it would pretty much have to be replaced for starts :) (on the k-29, the 2.5m bomb bay was pretty much entirely made thanks to the fact that we could surface attach control surfaces to other control surfaces - which is not the case anymore with the new plane parts)

So, outside of using tons of mod parts (which i almost don't use) it's going to be hard to fully rebuild in 0.90

Now, i'm waiting for 1.0 to see if there's something to be made with the new parts :)
