KSP In-Game Mod Manager

Recommended Posts

It would be great to see in-game mod manager, that allows to download and update mods automatically. It will be very helpful when official multiplayer will be in the game, so players don't need to search for mods that are installed on server, that we want to join, they just need to simply click on sever and mods will updated/downloaded automatically like they did it in Space Engineers, where you can browse mods from Steam Workshop

Features that we need:

- In-game Curse/Kerbal Stuff mod browser downloader.

- Game checks for updates at startup and asks ypu if you want to download them.

- Mods list that will allow you to enable, disable or uninstall mods, that you want to use on your singleplayer. You can also toggle mods for specific save files, so you can play both your stock career and heavily modded sandbox,

without having to install and uninstall every time you want to play on the other save file.

- (When multi player is added) When trying to connect to the sever game will download mods, that are installed on sever

Don't like the idea. It will slow down the modding process a great deal, not only that but any problems that arise from this way of installing mods are just another forum that will generate bug reports from users unrelated to the function of the mod. There is a reason modders don't like steam workshop-like mod repositories. It just installs mods without any checking for any incompatibilities, not only that but all mods would need to conform to the same folder structure and placement. And if something goes wrong with the auto-installer people will flock to the mod maker and complain about problems when it isn't their problem or fault and can't do anything about it. It simplifies the process too much, if someone can't copy and paste a simple folder they shouldn't be installing mods in the first place, there are enough clueless people around already causing problems for the mod makers and this will exacerbate the problem.

As you mentioned steam workshop, it is a perfect example of this. Nothing but problems for the people creating the mods, screaming/whining people who download those mods and tons of incompatibility/gamebreaking problems. Do you really want that mess on here too?

The simple fact is that a system like this would require a complete overhaul of how the game loads (which isn't necessarily a bad thing) which will most likely not happen any time soon. Also, compared to something like Space Engineers, modding KSP can be a lot more complex and there are a lot more cases where there are incompatibilities between mods, so doing something like this would require a much more complex system.

I think Squad should also increase the data capacity of the game. At the moment if you have to many mods it will halt loading the game, forcing you to close it and delete something; I'm sure we all know how hard it is to delete your mods. I have run into this problem a few times now and it really annoys me when it happens.
