Fuel transfer - make ONE button to start/stop transferring.

Recommended Posts

Has anyone been in a situation, where for example, you need to transfer fuel from a central tank to two side tanks?

When trying to fine-tune the fuel level, you are quickly jumping several times from the "out/in" button to the "stop" button, and half the times you mis-click it, while the fuel keeps being pumped.

Why not make life simple and turn the "Out", "In" & "Stop" buttons into a single "Start/Stop transfer" button?

And since we're into it now, why not make a digital fuel transfer system, where you enter in numbers how much fuel to transfer?

I found annoying the fact we can only make one single transfer at a time.

For your suggestion, it would be even better to set the src, dest and amount (by the same kind of sliders used for tweaking resource amount in editor), then click on transfer. The best would be to plan multiple transfers then execute all with a single click.

You might be interested in THIS.

That's pretty neat.

But I still think that making a whole 3 buttons at different locations is a silly idea.

Make it one!

- click once to transfer

- click again on that same button to stop

OR add another mode, a 2nd button perhaps, which does this:

- hold button to transfer

- release to stop

(this way you could just 'click' to transfer a tiny amount)

Yep. Very annoying when you have a big ship with lots of small tanks on it!

Also... anyone ever tried transferring from many little tanks to an orange tank?

I believe the Stop button not overlaping with Out/In buttons was intended. My guess is, as soon as the Stop button appeared with the clicked mouse pointer on it, it registered the event as well and stopped the transfer immediately before it even started. Clickable-through UI FTW.

We were promised a new fuel transfer by devs, Maxmaps mentioned it in one of his updates, even exactly in context of distributing fuel from one tank evenly to two. So hopefully we'll get something better over time.

As a workaround, when I expect I'll be distributing fuel by partially filling multiple tanks, I usually put multiple tanks of different sizes to my design. One of each FL-T100, FL-T200, FL-T400 etc, depending on size of the design. That allows me to measure exact portions for the destination tank. Of course I can't distribute remaining fuel from a tank exactly half by half that way. But I can get close to it.

Both Goodspeed and TAC-FB are good mod solutions, but yeah: stock fuel transfer is horrible. Not just balance, but time. Filling or emptying a craft with a lot of small tanks takes forever.

Speed of transfer depends on size of the destination tank. So if you're emptying small tank to large tank, it's done almost instantly. Even with that, emptying my Liquid Fuel Lifter was a chore. But hey, that was for a challenge and I needed to be as efficient as possible there.

Good reason to use fewer large rather than a lot of small tanks when you're building anything you're planning to refuel.

Unfortunately, my standard station resupply ships tend to be built like this:

Even my small Mun landers tend to have at least five tanks. Small tanks are a lot better at keeping the mass spread laterally, which is important for both reducing lander height and improving spaceplane balance.
