2 small ideas for rovers

Recommended Posts

1- Set speed (Cruise Control).

You are driving and reach 10m/s.

Press key "X" and your craft will try to match this speed as much as possible without crashing itself. Dosent matter if you are on a hill going up or down.

I know of the alt or w/e key for trim, but it's a pain to use I find. I would prefer a key for "lock current speed"

2- The option to display speed in something else than m/s (at least for rovers). I want Km/h, some us folks might want MPH instead.

thank you.

With regards to the latter, from memory I believe m/s was chosen because it is the standard units for speed. Don't know if that still holds, since some other units in the game are decidedly arbitrary, truth be told. But last time that one came up, it was met with a blanket refusal. :/

I could of course say there are mods that can already control rover speed but it would indeed very nice to have this stock.

In fact I would prefer it to go a step further. Don't just set throttle to the current speed. Instead make the throttle actually directly controllable by linking it to the same throttle we already have for engines.

I can see them linking it to the engine throttle but automating the speed is something they wont and i think cruise control qualifies as that. Would be nice if they had a rover mode like docking mode that automatically disables engines, links the wheels to the throttle, SAS keeps you mostly level (just enough to avoid tipping, not to make going over bumps an issue) and being able to set way-point targets on the surface.

the second one would be nice, you can do that using the far mod,but a stock implemation of this would be nice.

you know that you can switch betwen surface velocity and orbit velocity by clicking on the speedometer,in stede you could rightclick on it maybe to change the unit for the mesurement :D

My rovers tend to be stable up to a certain speed. Exact numbers vary, but a typical example would be "14m/s is no problem under any circumstances, 15m/s is reckless, 16m/s is suicidal".

So a cruise-control kind of solution would suit me best, while a mere throttle would be hardly any improvement over the current state of affairs.

What about an extra controller part, that once enabled acts a little like SAS. Firstly, the rover wheel power is linked to separate keys, which can be defined by the user. Rather than just the equal of W or S, it instead controls a power gauge, which goes into negative power (reverse) and positive power (forwards). For example, I would probably map my keys to something like P and :. Just because of the way I use my keyboard. Anyhow, with the added control part, you than activate by pressing another key that is mapped to your choice ('). There would obviously be default key mappings too. Press the key, the control module enables. A little window box comes up on screen, and you enter your desired speed in m/s. Once the speed is entered, the control module actively controls your power-gauge, moving it around to maintain the speed as best it can. Just an idea.
