Mojang in talks with Microsoft for 2 billion dollar sale

I just hope there won't be "hey, people, if you pay 9.99$, you'll get an expansion pack with 10 more different ores and 5 animals!"-policy. Cause that would wreck the already injured community. It would become annoying like WoW, and endless parade, a hole without bottom.

So far, 1.8 has been working fine for me.

To be honest that has never been Micrrosoft's policy for any product. If anything, regardless of what you think of them, MS has always gone great lengths to support compatibility for older versions. When Office went to a new file format they even provided plug-ins for older versions to enable reading and writing in the new format.

It is bitter for the Flightsim community though. Microsoft killed off FS (with a lively community and ecosystem) but is willing to pay $2B for the rights to a game that's in its golden years?

I agree when it comes to Office, MS do everything in their power to keep people within the ecosystem. It's a little different when you step outside of the corporate end of things. MS have historically had no issue attempting to use DirectX to strongly compel gamers to upgrade to the latest version of Windows.

The cynical part of me sees the next minecraft update on a windows platform being available for Windows 9 exclusively.

Microsoft's game division used to be the best thing about the company. It's sad really.

I've been playing since 1.8... Beta. I am a bit saddened by this news. All I can hope is that Microsoft doesn't do anything too bad to the game. It's kinda a good think that it's Mojang being purchased and not just the game, so MC should still have the same devs, right?

Good point. That is if the devs want to work for Microsoft! They have enough money to start up their own developing start ups.

Microsoft's history with acquisitions isn't stellar. Anyone remember rare?

EDIT:

Just noticed something in the report on the acquisition;

[Microsoft] expects the acquisition to be break-even during the 2015 fiscal year, which ends 30th June 2015. The deal closes late 2014.

so they expect to make $2.5 billion from Mojang in one year. Either they have something incredibly devious nearly ready, or whoever planned this deal is insane.

And, the sale has been made. Microsoft has just acquired Mojang for $2.5 BILLION. Notch has left. It even was on Sky News (on TV), and probably by BBC as well. It could be good; we can just remain hopeful that it isn't screwed up.

It was a top headline on BBC news app. Wow.

Bad for anyone who uses mods, CPW has stated he's quit along with several other modders. Also, it is *almost* amusing that people are asking for refunds on the sole premisie of Microsoft owning Mojang.

Yeah, everything is in the title.

You don't believe me?

ok, either you're are still in the denial phase or either you're simply skeptical.

Anyway, here's a link for that news: https://mojang.com/2014/09/yes-were-being-bought-by-microsoft/?utm_source=dlvr.it&utm_medium=tumblr

By the way, if you're too lazy to click on it, Microsoft bought Mojang for 2 500 000 000%(yeah, it's a LOT).

I've always had sympathy for Notch. Minecraft was a pet project that grew way beyond what was suspected of it - or what anyone was prepared for. They had to catch up to its unexpected popularity, and it unfortunately got messy as a result. Can't blame him for wanting to get away from it and slip back into the shadows.

Honestly is there any real reason why this is a terrible thing? It's not like it's EA, Microsoft is smart enough to know why Minecraft is as popular as it is, they wouldn't change it too drastically.

They'll probably abandon the PC version completely in a sick attempt to further boost X-box sales.
