getting into orbit the hard way

Recommended Posts

Been there, done that, got the t-shirt.

Now try landing on the Mun without map mode.

And without exterior view, inside cockpit only.

.

and yes, been there, done that.

I haven't been to duna on IVA only though, like this guy has done:

Scott Manley did this oh, almost 2 years ago.

For your information, earliest KSP versions had no map (worse UI instruments and no wiki to tell you orbital velocities etc.), and people were still reaching orbit, even making them circular...

Also as nine_iron mentions docking. We were successfully "docking" crafts (and even landing them together on Kerbin) before docking ports and RCS were implemented :D

You guys are playing easy mode now :P:P

Some time ago Scott Manley posted a video where he got a ship (Kerbal-X, I think) into orbit with his monitor switched off.

Easy mode, yes. But the game is also admittedly more fun now than it used to be.

But... it's really easy even for the new players. Actually, when I got to orbit first time, I didn't use the map because I thought it was useless function. And many of russian youtubers doesn't use the map view for getting to the orbit.

Yeh, but thats only to Mun. Duna is a lot harder target to hit.

I'm sure he did that too, but I failed to locate a video for it.

The one I quoted was the earliest Kerbin->duna->Kerbin on IVA only I've been able to find. (jan 2013)

Ok, that I have to see!

>>thinks about it<<

um. erm. that I *really* have to see. Not for the achievement of the launch, but for the achievement of figuring out how to show an off monitor, without boring the pants off the watcher.

How did you know?

With no instruments to tell you your Ap and Pe did you just have to sit there for an orbit and see what the lowest and highest altitudes shown were?

Most certainly is :) I'm just being nostalgic, really liked the raw feel back then (up to ~0.17 update)...

Basically yeah. The vertical velocity dial was running from -20 to 20 m/s (linear) so it was a little faster/easier to judge the small altitude changes
but what if your in a sub orbit trying to get into orbit with out map mode
You have velocity vector on the nav ball, so you "eyeball" it :D Keeping track of the rate of changes (alt, speed and attitude angle), as you get closer to circular orbit things will change more slowly, then if you are past it the changes reverse too so you know where to stop. A little patience and experience is all you need really.

That, or use some math. Altitude + velocity vector is enough to determine if orbit is achieved.

Not, perhaps, if you're accelerating straight down? ^^. Yes, I know what you mean but I was just asking a genuine question from curiosity. Nao's nailed it :-)
