The Little used Polar Orbit

I like a show of hands of how many have used a polar orbit in there playing time? I have once to put up my polar explorer craft but other than that what\'s the use other than being different and being slightly harder to put into place? Anyway I guess I felt like rambling but seriously is there any use?

I used them for my sat shield because they gave me more complete coverage of the planet. Another use is if you want to map the entire planet.

Yea but what use do we have in mapping the planet, if koogle maps(stupid k\'s) wanted to map cities yea but in this version it\'s useless besides sat shields.

Roleplaying, mainly.

Though now with the Satellite Relay Networks plugin the polar orbit has a use.

For the stock, non-roleplaying player, polar orbits are useless.

Did it a couple of times back when there wasn\'t anything else to do (before I launched a glorious expedition to the sun ;)). Seriously though, I don\'t think I have since rotation was actually added.

PS: Anyone done either of a polar munar orbit, or polar mun landing?

My very first orbits were polar ones because i had to make sure my bottom stage wouldn\'t hit the tower and explode.

Since the mun and some design changes, I always launch with a heading of 90 degrees and a pitch of 89 Polar orbits seem a waste of time to me, but maybe I\'ll put a satellite or two in a polar orbit anyways just for giggles.

I used only polar orbits from 8.5 to .10, when the orbital map was introduced. I did that because they were the easiest to do (for me). You just hit down, no rotation or anything. Now, of course, I do all kinds of orbits. Polar orbits I don\'t find useful, save for the occasional relay satellite.

Yeah. I just remembered that I automatically went north back then. Like you said, it was the easiest path to take.

Same here. I think I have one Polar Satellite at the moment, it was the first one I managed to get up in 0.14... I was having trouble adjusting since I was used to using Silisko Edition, but I couldn\'t be bothered to download that, I just wanted to play.

Exactly. Before the Mun was implemented, there was no point in rotating the rocket around and going equatorial. Plus if you went over the poles you got a nice view of the polar holes. ;)

Eeyup. Now, it\'s a lot easier to transfer to the Mun on an equatorial orbit, plus it\'s easier to land near the KSC.

  • 4 months later...

I had a rocket that liked to escape orbit if i launched east, so i put a few into polar orbit.

...actually, there still there. 2 ran out of fuel, the third had more fuel but was between a ASAS modualand the other tanks so it got stuck too.

Well I mean, what's the point of the game in it's current state? What's the point of any game for that matter?

I made a polar orbit in interest of mapping, but never got around to it. It was rather tough to do by hand, resorted to MechJeb to get it spot on

I use them for the mapping mod, having one around each of the three Kerbin bodies. Shame it only works when using the craft.

They are good for polar landings too, obviously. Having a craft at both Munar poles. There's some interesting landscape there in perpetual twilight- I recommend a landing if you have not done it already.

Not sure why so many use them for comsats. Since 3 or 4 in equatorial orbit having line-of-sight links gives you 100% coverage. Just make sure the comsats have at least 2 dishes, but best to have 4.
