Spaceplane Speed Challenge IV: Up and Down

Recommended Posts

Cool.

It's been the turning around that's the hard part so far.

That and trying to get a good trajectory back to the runway. I hit a learning curve with FAR in this aspect because it treats the atmosphere differently...

A new time for the Benchmark!

Off we go.

screenshot1110_zps1a26702b.jpg

Up.

screenshot1111_zps5f704b1b.jpg

And away.

screenshot1113_zps6045f5d9.jpg

Rocket time.

screenshot1116_zps3a293fa2.jpg

Done.

screenshot1117_zpsf845bd44.jpg

Back.

screenshot1120_zps1ec84366.jpg

Down.

screenshot1121_zps62146292.jpg

Turn, turn, turn.

screenshot1122_zpsf9be82d5.jpg

Just about.

screenshot1123_zps2f652c8b.jpg

Done.

screenshot1124_zpsa5cfb9f3.jpg

Zoom.

screenshot1128_zps05ac6740.jpg

screenshot1129_zpsd7d89a74.jpg

Get some approach room.

screenshot1130_zps328187e8.jpg

And slow back down.

screenshot1131_zps0cf6e74f.jpg

Lined up?

screenshot1133_zps6084a035.jpg

Nah.

screenshot1135_zps518a4da7.jpg

screenshot1136_zps714f6f57.jpg

24 minutes, 16 seconds. Obviously still room for improvement.

Got you beat using the benchmark and FAR. Only other mod used was MechJeb.

Stock benchmark painted "Neon Ghost"....

And we're off!

WVoyDol.png

Burning up through the sky!

eMkZzsy.png

Coasting to AP

auII0DT.png

Circularized

waqEI5O.png

Dropping PE

YoMKiQn.png

Down we go! Yes, tail first!

KQhQkDn.png

Slow it down!

33UeXgB.png

And there you have it ladies and gentlemen! A perfectly balanced turn on his tail! What a feat!

qQ4B4fe.png

Burning back towards KSC

hAPU2wC.png

Long way to go!

iHwWzHv.png

GO! GO! GO! FASTER FASTER!

uwniiv9.png

Slow it down... Out of gas!

L6XiGk8.png

Slow slow slow, glide it to the runway, which I still had gas!

SHlBzIy.png

Almost there, line it up!

1UcN47t.png

Aaaaaaaaand....

Fdraskr.png

Landed!

23 Minutes and 56 seconds!

I can definitely improve this by quite a bit. My return trip was botched a bit and my AP got too high so I had to correct it. I also had some wobbles when I tipped on my tail doing the turn-around maneuver. I can definitely optimize my return and probably shave off another 30-60 seconds. But for now, I have a mission story line to work on :)

I'll do another run, but not today.

BTW, those of you having fun with the Benchmark, keep in mind that it's the test ship for these as well:

I'd be particularly keen to see some competition on the economy challenge. That could finally settle all of the "which is the best way to fly to orbit" arguments.

BTW, it looks like you're actually using the alternate designed-for-stock-aero Benchmark. The FAR version had advanced canards on the nose and a pair of AV-R8's behind them.

Hmm, does it really make a difference? I've never used FAR until now so I really don't know...

By the way, I DID NOT autoland! I was only using it for the navball indicator to find the runway. If I was using autoland you'd see an abort button...

Yup, just caught that; leaderboard fixed. Sorry 'bout that.

The designed-for-FAR version will probably be a touch quicker if anything. The CoL on the version you used is a bit further back than it should be.

How'd you get it back up to Mach 7? A bit of oxidiser left? FAR-nerfed air breathers top out around Mach 6.

Yep, I purposely left about 800 delta-v after dropping my peri so that I could get back quicker. You can see the oxy in the pic where im burning down backwards, look at the resources. Next time I'll use the right plane!

Let's have one more go.

Briskly up as usual.

screenshot23_zpsbc068425.jpg

Quite briskly. Love a supersonic climber.

screenshot24_zps9028ec47.jpg

Up.

screenshot25_zpsa1b2decb.jpg

And around. 4 minutes 27 seconds.

screenshot26_zps164b9727.jpg

Flip.

screenshot27_zpsd7b000d3.jpg

Back down.

screenshot28_zps11977d07.jpg

Dive to get down quick.

screenshot29_zps134aa7ff.jpg

And keep the gas on through the turn.

screenshot31_zpsb99a99e9.jpg

screenshot32_zps5e169624.jpg

Throttle off and turn to slow when the target gets near.

screenshot34_zps5d2c9d6f.jpg

Dump some more altitude and speed in a hurry.

screenshot36_zpsa7f3b05f.jpg

Line it up.

screenshot38_zps69cc52c6.jpg

And down. 23 minutes, 23 seconds.

Sorry, Jovus. :)

Y'all were having so much fun with the Benchmark that I thought I'd do a tuned-up version.

I'm still working on the perfect trajectory with this, but it can definitely get well below 20 minutes. Anyway, I thought I'd let y'all have a play with it now to keep you busy until 25 drops: https://www.dropbox.com/s/qv9v27spfkzlgub/KSV%20Benchmark%20GTHO.craft?dl=0

So let's see how good the KSV boys are...

Ready to go.

screenshot153_zps7715fe3a.jpg

Up.

screenshot154_zps33554074.jpg

Away.

screenshot155_zpsf308d2fd.jpg

Steep to begin with.

screenshot123_zps2bb00885.jpg

But flatten out as soon as the air thins.

screenshot156_zpsb8617d7d.jpg

Time for rockets.

screenshot157_zps807c88f4.jpg

Proof of up. Hard to get circular when you don't have time to wait.

screenshot158_zps48e1aa13.jpg

Flip, burn and straight back the other way. Enough juice to reverse orbital direction.

screenshot159_zps5ac7f7ec.jpg

Get the jets back on as soon as they can breathe.

screenshot177_zpsdf0eff51.jpg

Pulling some G's.

screenshot179_zpsb7ac31dc.jpg

Some serious G's.

screenshot180_zps0b5260cf.jpg

Actually, that's getting a bit alarming.

screenshot181_zps3757269a.jpg

But made it! Up and away.

screenshot182_zpsda316ce0.jpg

Running out of gas, need to throttle off.

screenshot183_zpse17e415c.jpg

Dive in.

screenshot185_zpsbe18589f.jpg

Line it up.

screenshot174_zps09f53a08.jpg

Gear down.

screenshot186_zps82c0d556.jpg

Final approach.

screenshot187_zps71fe12e4.jpg

And down. 17 minutes, 24 seconds. A new champion!
