Quick question about suggestions

Today I wanted to suggest something (a new part), so I go to the suggestion forum and read the mod posts first... can't suggest parts apparently, with links to mods.

I can understand that keeping the forum clean is important, but mods can stop being supported and parts could stop working at any given point in time (or create lots of Kraken attacks, lag, etc). It has happened to me yesterday. So I am a bit biased against mods right now, having lost many hours being eaten by the kraken.

So if we can't suggest parts, how am I, as a customer, supposed to let you (squad) know what I would need to make my game experience better ? This isn't a complain but a genuine question. I really want to know.

Thank you for your time, and loving the game lots so far !

Generally a part that you want to see added that isn't purely aesthetic over stock parts adds some form of new functionality. Ergo suggestions of features is where to go with that. Though do take care not to suggest something that's on the "do not suggest" list just the same.

I see. You are right about some of them being aesthetic, other are merely variant on existing engine type. I guess I'm just tired of sorting thru mods to find the ONE piece I am looking for, only for it to cause bugs that never let go (thankfully did not happen often).

Stock part have the advantage of being 100% compatible and auto-updated each update.

Thanks for the answer.

The fact that someone has bothered to make a mod means that there's a relatively large demand for it, therefore meaning it's pretty much a nod to a suggestion of it being in the stock game.

The devs realize this, too.

and any mod posted on this forum HAS to have source available so if the dev disappears then others can take up support (as happened to the kerbal paint IIRC)

No, it has to have the source so that people have the opportunity to prove it is not malicious, but that doesn't mean you can do anything with it, even if you can see the source it still falls under the authors chosen license and if the license is permissive, then yes it can be continued. KerbPaint is not permissive and so it can not be continued.

I don't know how effective that is, couldn't you just post the source code for a mod and put up a download for a virus with roughly the right file size?

Actually, I can positively affirm you have much more chance of having bugs in code controlling your parts fixed if the code is from a mod than if it is from stock. Air intake code has been broken since forever, and the gimbal has been *partially* fixed in the last update after more than a year of bug.

If the source is available then people can compile it themselves and do a hash check to see if the checksum is the same and I`m fairly sure any mod doing what you suggest would get caught out pretty quick.

To me it seems that each mod has a dedicated person (or more) fixing bugs very actively. The bugs are reported and sometimes (I`m looking at you sarbian, nathankell, starwaster, tiraniselsu, ferram4, roverdude, etc) they are fixed the same day, or shortly afterward. There are VERY active mods out there...

The only downside is that , just after an update, the mods take a little while to figure out what is causing the new bugs but this does not take long.
