MK-16 and Deadly ReEntry Question

Recommended Posts

I cannot figure out for the life of me what I am doing wrong.

I have DRE and FAR installed.

I made a simple rocket.

1 Command Pod MK1

Ontop of that and Mk16 Parachute

Under the command pod, 2x FL-T400 Fuel Tanks

Attach 3 AV-T1 Winglets

Finally the Engine LV-T30 Liquid Fuel Engine.

Bring this up into a sub orbital flight and then let it fall back down.

No matter what my max altitude is, or the angle I come in at, I survive the heat re-entry, but when I release the MK16 Parachute, it fails. It says "chute failure excessive heat".

I make sure I climb straight up until 10k feet and then I go to a 45 degree angle till I reach the altitude I want.

I try to deploy it at 23000m, 15000m and always the same result. I press the space bar and my chute automatically turns red.

Pressing f3 always says its due to heat. What temperature should the parachute be before you deploy it?

I have noticed if I wait till its like 30 degrees it is fine. But by that point I am at 8000m.

There was a minor bug regarding parachutes with DRE and the inital release for .25. There was a patched released very shortly after that. So make sure you have the most recent DRE.

That being said, why is deploying your chutes at 8km a problem?

I have a similar issue even with the latest version of Deadly Reentry. Originally, I thought this was a RealChutes problem. But further debugging shows it's a Deadly Reentry problem.

If I activate the chute using staging, it simply will not deploy, regardless of altitude or temperature. I get a spam in my mission log that my chute failed to deploy due to excessive heat, but my chute is in perfect condition visually.

If I activate the chute using the right click menu, under the same conditions, everything works fine.

Altitudes don't matter here; velocity does. Based on the altitudes you have mentioned though, I gather that you're deploying your chutes well above 600 m/s. Even at those speeds, the heat is enough to destroy the chute. This sounds like intended behavior to me.

That would make sense, if it wasn't for the fact that immediately pressing the stage button again, or using the right-click menu to deploy the chute worked under the exact same circumstances.

Either the right-click menu should tear the chute off too at that speed, or the staging button should work the first time. Either scenario sounds like a bug to me.

You need to only pop parachutes when your craft has slowed down enough that the air won't either rip the chute to shreds or burn it up (fast air hitting something heats it quite a bit, and there's a *lot* of parachute for it to hit).

That means waiting until you're subsonic, yes.

I have the latest DRE, and the same thing kept happening to me. Though, not using the mk 16, I was using RealChutes radial. RIP Jebediah.

I tested it once more and made sure I was around 500 m/s when I let her rip. Same situation. I'm sure I was under 550 m/s, as I had a testing contract that got fulfilled.

Edit: Got it to work at 400 m/s. Even at 450 m/s, chutes failed.

Same thing here. I skimmed through other threads and yeah it looks like you need to be below 400m/s to deploy chutes (I am using RealChutes).

However there is a problem, I cant slow down to that velocity...

Using Mk.1 pod going straight down from 100km and I hit the ground at about 500-600 m/s. I honestly dont down whats going on but I suspect its either DeadlyReentry or NEAR or RealChutes. I have a bunch of other mods installed but dont think they have something to do with it. Every mod is up to date. Help is much appreciated.

Edit: I installed FAR instead of NEAR and it did slow me down significantly, enough to deploy chutes safely at subsonic speed. So I believe it is safe to assume that there is an issue with NEAR.
