Coming back to KSP after 6-month break, question regarding old mods

Hi,

I played KSP ~6 month ago for a bit (managed to land and return from Gilly, (just an fyi on how "advanced" I was). Now, Im guessing I would want to start all over, in order to do the career mode again, with new features added.

Am I correct to think, that I need to:

1) Update KSP via steam and go to mods folder to remember what mods I had, and update them one-by-one?

2) And if I were to delete a couple of mods, would my old save not work? (I'd like to delete life-support mod, as in the end it was too much hassle to maintain)

P.S.

3) Any career focused mods you would recommend?

Thanks

You're probably best off backing up your old install, and then doing a totally fresh re-install.

Your old saves may or may not work depending on the deleted mods. I really wouldn't worry about it too much since I would also recommend a fresh career save in addition to the fresh install. In the last 6 months, Squad added funds, contracts, and strategies. You're probably better off learning these new mechanics with a new save.

Most mods have been updated to work with 0.25. The only "Career focused mods" I can think of are Fine Print (adds new contract types) and Kerbal construction time (adds build times to rockets). I would actually recommend getting a handle on career without these to start off with. You should be able to add fine print in later without hassle. (The devs have actually stated they will be adapting fine print into stock in the next release or so).

Welcome back and clear skies!

Thanks for a quick reply.

I will do a fresh reinstall of KSP (I can always build another space station around Minmus later:).

And what about "Better than start manned" mod? Is it way to different from anything else? Is it integrated with new features of KSP well?

Hi,

6 month is rather much, i guess even if you update your mods you will end up with a non loading Vessel. Many mods had compatibility breaking updates in this timespan but without knowing your mops exactly its a guess.

I would recomend going a round in standard Kerbal to get aclimated (You will have a lot more parts than 6 Month before ;) ) and then browsing kerbalstuff.com and curse.com and pick what you like. I don't know what you like =)

I like "deadly reentry" and "far" because of realism and some building helpers (Kerbal Engineer, Editor Extensions and Part Angle Display). Other than that it comes to personal taste.

Greetings

Ben

Better Than Starting Manned is interesting and well worth a try, but keep in mind that it's a curated experience meant to stand on its own. It has one other mod as a dependency, and there's a small number of tools and visual/aesthetics mods that are fine to run alongside it, but anything else will simply break things. Maybe not the game, but definitely the experience.

BTSM is something you play by itself if you're specifically looking for what it offers. If you're looking to build a GameData folder of cool stuff from all over the forums, then that's not the place for it.

And I'd recommend Near Future Technologies, except that the death coma of TreeLoader means that the custom tech tree module won't work and thus it's no longer working as the progression extension it was designed to be. It still features amazing models and a great number of interesting parts though!

So I reinstalled KSP and installed the following mods:

MechJeb (for custom info panels),

FinePrint (so many contracts, i like it),

Fairings (like good-looking rockets),

ScienceAlert (convenient),

Alarm (convenient),

SatScan (another thing to do).

Everything seems to be working fine, so let the space race begin (again)! :)

Quick question without new thread - was VAB/launched orientation changed? Now I start 90 degrees rotated, unless I move 90 degrees in the VAB when building rocket

Your rocket now starts in the same orientation as it will be on the launch pad. (previously the rocket would be rotated 90 degrees on the launch pad. That VAB orientation just changed to match)

This thread is quite old. Please consider starting a new thread rather than reviving this one.
