Massive RAM reduction???

So a few weeks ago I got the occasional out of memory crash, however last night I did a defrag of my hard drive and also got Razer booster. So now I open with task manager and it says 668, 127K!!!! I'm not sure if it was a combination of both or just one or even wrong, but its very strange...

Edit: when in play it goes to about 881, 132 K

Edit2: Hmm it seems that turning Razer booster off and on again seems to clear up a lot of RAM (well what it displays anyway, might not be accurate)

In my experience, about 100% of the software that claims to speed up or streamline your computer is flat out lying. Some of it simply does nothing, and most makes it worse.

QFT

Windows, Linux and MacOS do a pretty good job managing memory. They swap stuff onto the hard drive if more is needed and swap it back if there is enough free space. There's nothing you can do to improve that.

x2 QFT. I would also keep drivers/OS updates current, run Wise RegClean/Disk Clean and service your machine if possible (Clean out fan's, heatsinks, re-paste CPU etc) just general servicing.

or you could download more RAM.

Some "booster" softwares can indeed speed up certain things.

However, they do it by shifting around processing priorities and such, meaning that while a few things may get (a tiny bit) faster, all other things will get (a tiny bit) slower. For example: a consumer Windows version is set up out of the box for a consumer direct usage scenario, i.e. it expects a person in front of the keyboard running interactive single-user software with fancy GUIs, and is configured accordingly. If you just want your computer to sit in the corner without a monitor connected and run some sort of server for 30 concurrent users, then there are indeed ways to tweak a consumer Windows to act more suitable to that purpose. A Windows Server release, on the other hand, will be configured the other way around out of the box.

Just keep in mind that every gain is offset by a loss somewhere else, and unless you have an extremely specific scenario with an extremely specific optimization, the gains might maybe show up in benchmarks but certainly won't be noticable to the average human being. It's certainly not worth paying any money for it in 99.9% of all cases - and most freeware tends to be loaded with trojans.

Gamesbooster simply shuts down background programs and processes. Rather than simpy accepting the default setting, it's worthwhile to tweak it so that you set what it does and does not turn off. It can make a significant difference to game performance.

Make sure that you also tweak your security suite settings, and allow the appropriate programmes (i.e. your games).

I find I get a lot better performance if I shut down any processes that I don't need. I have both dropbox and google drive apps running the in the background - they are all asking for memory usage and cpu cycles - closing everything down will do nothing but improve things - even if you *have* to have firefox running; minimise it when using KSP - that'll help a great deal on performance.

Also I heard that changing KSP priority to high in task manager helps a great deal - I've tried it myself and it seems to have made a difference when one of my applications decided to wake up - like newsleecher deciding to start downloading or my anti-virus wanting to do a hard drive scan in the middle of a launch - yes this happened to me a 2am on a sunday morning - when I scheduled that I had no idea KSP even existed let alone that I would be playing a computer game at that time on that night! When KSP is in high mode it takes priority over most other applications so everything else will slow down while KSP keeps going - very handy.

I'd agree with all that's been posted about how many memory boost programs make false claims but the ones that shut down background tasks do work well.

Especially if you're running Win 7 with an aero theme (i.e. transparent windows, slideshow or animated desktop etc.) Aero is a monster resource hog.

I like this one because it gives precise control of services and 3rd party software -> Jetboost

Agree with this.

A pc needs maintanence just like a car does. I do that every week.

In my experience, about 100% of the software that claims to speed up or streamline your computer is flat out lying. Some of it simply does nothing, and most makes it worse. Your best bets are hardware upgrades, and if you're running Windows, a fresh install every so often.

QFT x3, though a de-frag can work wonders. Unfortunately, Anti-Virus' use quite a bit of power, but that's a necessary evil; the best thing is just to keep you computer clear of programs you don't need, and shut down ones that don't need to be running at the time. Just as example, a friend of mine has the same PC as me (apart from graphics card and power supply), but because he has so many programs running in the background, his PC uses 2.8GB of RAM when idling, but mine only uses 1.5GB... He's had problems running some games just because of this...

or you could download more RAM.

Or yeah, you could do that here :)

Disclaimer: It's a joke
