All saves corrupted, even when starting a new one? no ROSTER node found in Save State

Recommended Posts

Kerbal Space Program - 0.25.0.642 (WindowsPlayer) Steam

EDIT: Further troubleshooting revealed that this does not affect all my other saves, just that trying to load one save (my primary game), fails, and then makes the game unable to load any games until a restart.

OS: Windows 7 Service Pack 1 (6.1.7601) 64bit

CPU: Intel® Core i5 CPU 760 @ 2.80GHz (4)

RAM: 8191

GPU: AMD Radeon R9 200 Series (2030MB)

SM: 30 (Direct3D 9.0c [aticfx32.dll 8.17.10.1315])

RT Formats: ARGB32, Depth, ARGBHalf, RGB565, ARGB4444, ARGB1555, Default, DefaultHDR, ARGBFloat, RGFloat, RGHalf, RFloat, RHalf, R8

I was happily playing along today, about to send my first probe to the Jool system, when things went south.

I tried to do a quicksave before starting my escape burn, and noticed that the little "quicksaving..." notice on the bottom right did not show up. I got suspiciton, opened the Esc menu and clicking the buttons did nothing - couldn't go back to main menu or revert, go back to KSC screen, couldn't even quit the game. Alt-f4 and restart and the saves wouldn't load for either of my ongoing games. Tried to start a new game, worked. Quit and reloaded. Now the new game wouldn't load either. Backed up GameData folder and my current save files and deleted local content and completely reinstalled. Still can't load saves, even when running only stock. Verified game cache on Steam, says it's fine. I'm totally at a loss.

I hope this save can be salvaged somehow. I had a lot of time into this one, and was about to do some really big (for me) missions. :(

I think maybe you should start by listing all of the mods you have used with this particular save that's giving you trouble. Maybe you could upload the persistent.sfs somewhere and post the link here so that I or someone else can have a look and see if it can be fixed.

A mod (most likely) you have installed is throwing an exception when the game saves the state. Do the following:

Create a new game

Exit to main menu if you can

Exit KSP

Post the output_log.txt found in (KspInstallDir)/KSP_Data

Okay, first thing I did was to load the stock game, start a new game, called "Testy McKermanson", quit and reload. Worked fine for that save, though I was still unable to load any of the previous saves. Then I put my mods back in.

Current Mod Folder List:

Toolbar_000

BoulderCo (for EVE)

Chatterer

DistantObject (Distant Object enhancement)

Dmagic Orbital Science

EnvironmentalVisualEnhancements

GHud

KAS (Kerbal Attachment System)

KerbalEngineer

Kerbal Joint Reinforcement

KronalUtils

MechJeb2

MechJeb2Embedded by Dennis6492

NASAmission (Stock)

PreciseNode

ProceduralFairings

SCANsat

Squad (Stock)

TriggerTech (Kerbal Alarm Clock?)

Also the following files:

ModuleManager.2.5.1.dll

sun_flare.tex.dds

toolbar-settings.dat

and a shortcut to my "unused mods" folder for when I want to easily disable a mod.

Now, here is the interesting part:

I was able to load the previous new save file, called "Why God Why", that I created when I first started having this issue, just before I posted this thread. That one loaded at first. Then I attempted to load my main career game "Kerbimus Prime", and nothing happened when I clicked the button. THEN i tried "Why God Why" again, and it would NOT load. Then I tried my secondary science sandbox game "Kerbin Dallas". Still no good.good. And then the newest save file "Testy McKermanson" as requested by xEvilReeperx. Nothing.

Here is a direct link to the output log on my public dropbox folder:

https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/35998341/output_log.txt

Here is an overall link to my DB folder, which includes copies of my gamesave folders:

Thank you all for your help and advice. This community rules.

Okay, so I've re-downloaded the latest versions of most of my mods and everything appears fine when I load the Why God Why, and Testy McKermanson, and my older sandbox Game, Kerbin Dallas. I can exit out and load one or the others with ease and no problems. However, once I attempt to load Kerbimus Prime - my main game that I was playing when all of this started, everything immediately goes wrong and I can no longer load anything unless I restart the game. So it looks like at this point, the issue lies in something that one of my mods did to my main game save, which has hopefully been rectified by reinstalling my mods, and there is just a lingering issue with my savegame that screws up the game whenever the game tries to load it.

I did google and found a thread where someone else had a similar problem in another thread. I tried editing the file and removing one of the bracers before the ROSTER node, but that had no effect.

Thread here - unfortunately UbioZur didn't tell is how he fixed it.

Edit: I also added the output log for the above troubleshooting to my dropbox as output_log 2

If the ROSTER node is actually missing completely from the save file, chances are it's been truncated entirely -- cut off before any of the major data was saved. If you have a recent quicksave, or other backup file, you can rename that file to persistent.sfs (after removing the busted file) and the game will load that instead.

Yeah, i think that might be the problem. It might not even be in the most recent quicksave, either :(

Actually, now that I think of it, the 2 active flights were unmanned. Would there be a way to manually re-enter the missing information?

EDIT: I looked in my previous save files, neither the primary nor the quicksave had the ROSTER node in it. However, an earlier file, called "Valkyrie Home" seems to have the node in it. I could try that one, but that would set me back a ways. I guess I still have my ship files saved at least, so I could just relaunch. But is there a way I could just copy/paste the missing information into my primary save and retain my more recent progress?

Looks like the game did load when I tried from an earlier quicksave after renaming it to "persistent" and deleting the other quicksaves in the folder (and adding back in the bracer that I had deleted earlier). It's from much earlier, like, sometime in September, but at least I don't have to start completely over, and my ships are still there.
