Ok, first hint: I see how you came to Armageddon, but this description is almost literal.

I read a book called "Germinal" by Zola. The plot sounds familiar but I have not seen a movie version of it. That is my guess.

My second guess is "Snowpiercer". The train is not exactly a mine but essentially, it is. The children on the train are essentially "mined" since they are precious resource on the train since only they can keep the train moving.

There's a strike on the Deathstar, Palpatine is killed, the poor are freed from Imperial rule.

If I'm right here's my movie:

Besides, Palpatine doesn't die (or even appear) in the first Star Wars movie, and even in the third, Luke does not kill him. Vader and Palpatine kill each other.

But darn, I was so sure it was V. I mean, the villain is even named "Creedy" for heck's sake

So yeah, I got nothin'. Can't recall any sci-fi movies involving mining right now...
