lastlived
I'm trying to get mods working for the first time and I've noticed many of them (So they tell me) will simply not work on a 64 bit KSP because of instability. I'm not one to really just leave things out so;Other notes: I'm using the steam version, the OS I'm running is Windows 7 64x Professional, the mod that lifted this question to me primarily was Ferrum Aerospace but the internet assures me other mods I have been trying out today may also not work with 64 bit Kerbals. How do I detect what version of KSP I have (Bit-wise)?How do I change a 64 bit to a 32 bit on steam. If I cannot change the bit version, is there any set of things to delete or change to make the mods work for 64 bit KSP? Or are the mods Lying to me and can work? Edited December 1, 2014 by lastlived
diomedea
Steam install both the Windows 32 bit (KSP.exe) and the 64 bit (KSP_x64.exe) executables in the main KSP folder. Instead of launching KSP via the link Steam adds to the desktop, you can add links to both those executables and choose what you want. But both share the same settings, /GameData content (therefore, add-ons) and /saves.To check what version you are running, the easiest way is to look at the bottom-right corner of the initial selection screen (where "Start Game", "Settings", ... "Quit" appear). There is shown the version and build of the executable: if a 64 bit, it will end with "(x64)", but no such ending for a 32 bit. There are techniques to fool the checks implemented in add-ons about the 64bit version. Sometimes, these add-ons work on 64bit, but my advice is to use the 32bit version, definitely more stable and better supported.

OpenWorldAddict
I found another solution. Since I don't use desktop shortcut's your solution did not work for me, but the one I found may work for other people, which is why I am posting it.I launch most of my games directly from steam since I have a lot of steam games and I don't want game shortcuts cluttering up my desktop. The only problem is that every time it launches, it launches into 64 bit mode. I've learned that this is just a default setup, a setup that can be changed. Here's how to do it: (note these instructions are is only for Windows 7)1. From your steam library, right click on the Kerbal Space Program link and left click on 'Properties' in the contextual pop-up menu. This will bring up the Steam properties dialog box associated with the game. 2. Go over to the 'Local Files' tab in the Steam game properties dialog box, then left click the 'Browse Local Files' button. This will bring up the Kerbal Space Center game folder in your windows explorer.3. Scroll down until you see the file 'Launcher.exe' double click that. This will bring up the Kerbal Space Program Launcher. Because Steam usually launches from one of the other two exe files, you will never see this launcher unless you open it up from the game folder.4. Click on the gear icon at the bottom of the launcher. This will change the launcher to show launcher options.5. Click the advanced button on top to bring up the advanced options page.6. Click to deselect the option that reads 'Run 64 bit player', then click apply, and then accept.7. Quit the launcher, close down the Steam game properties dialog box, and launch the game. If you follow these instructions to the letter, the game should now launch in 32 bit mode.
Bryankc
I use 32-bit because of my mods on KSP, but recently i have been unable to launch it. everytime i have clicked play on steam and had the normal option selected, it keeps launching 64-bit, without my mods or my progress. Is there any way to fix this? I'm using windows 10, so that may be a problem.
Snark
This is an ancient topic, from years ago, and no longer relevant. Back when this was originally posted, 64-bit KSP was an unstable nightmare. Now it isn't. Totally different situation. Accordingly, locking this post to prevent further confusion. If you have questions about current KSP, feel free to open a new thread.
