Maneuver node tracking is coming. What are your thoughts?

Recommended Posts

Tracking station sounds like a good idea, but side note here (hope this doesn't derail)

/off topic--

If your crew has no pilots, SAS will not be available. You could carry an extra scientist or engineer this way, but then the piloting will be entirely up to you. :)

Secret 0.90 feature 0_0 .... DIFFERENT CREW TYPES !!!!

HYPE !!!, spamming this in the hype thread !!!! (single post)

/on topic

Maybe could of proportional modifiers, low tech probe close to Kerbin has all function, but further out they lose the functions, then to use the advanced functions farther out, you need better core....

Multiple crew roles were announced a while back.

My feelings are a bit mixed.

I love to manually control my craft but I hate it that absolute precision is nearly impossible to achieve.

Definitely going to use that to get my aerocaptures right during the exit burn. I almost always have to place a second node a few minutes later to get it quite the way I want it...

But I might just take another scientist or engineer... I mean, I could always just slap a probecore on top to replace that pilot, right?

To me it wasn't so much direct control from the tracking station. More that as the tracking station improves the computational resources it has to anticipate what the probe needs to do to get where it's going improves. Similarly as communications improves the further it can send updated programming. So the probe cores all improve because they have better ground support not because they get better memory or a faster processor.

It could be combination of the two in each size have a basic and advanced cores. advanced cores can handle situational factors like landing and reaching orbit but all the cores get better at following the planned manoeuvres as the tracking station updates.

I like the idea that the "skill" of the probe would drop with distance.

It needs a way to set an angle-above-the-horizon.

Not only would this be useful for precision ascents (like I can already do with MechJeb2), it would also be INVALUABLE for spaceplanes.

There's NOTHING more annoying than having to manually hold an angle of 18 degrees above the horizon for 12 (real-life) minutes while my spaceplane ascends to max cruising altitude (only 4-5 minutes of Kerbal-time, but lag...) Or even more so, when I'm trying to just fly around Kerbin to test some designs and collect a little biome !SCIENCE!

See image #6 in this album. Do you KNOW how annoying it would be to hold a heading of 160 degrees and Angle of Attack of 1 degree for 50+ Kerbal-minutes (over an hour in real-time) manually while my polar expedition returns to the KSC over a long, boring stretch of ocean?

The same principles apply if I build a Duna-plane (which by its very nature, needs to have low TWR and precise AoA control to stay in the air long enough to travel anywhere), which is still something I'm meaning to eventually get around to for my current Career game and the Flying Duna challenge...
