Should Kerbals be able to grab each other?

Recommended Posts

Due to reasons i dont want to talk about (i.e. i just barely ran out of fuel on the way back from a rescue mission from the mun, so i had to use EVA RCS fuel to deorbit rescue vessel but ran out of RCS fuel in the process while Bill was still outside the vessel), i had Bill in EVA with no RCS fuel remaining, and had to pick him up by maneuvering the craft to him so that he could grab hold.

HD youtube video of the rescue:

I was wondering if you guys think it should be possible to use one kerbal to grab another so that we wouldnt have to maneuver craft into position?

You could make this broader to make it more generally useful. Say, Kerbals can grab hold of anything and move it, and treat other Kerbals as objects that can be grabbed too. It would still have limited use even then though really, unless Squad implemented some kind of KAS system.

I don't think tethers are very necessary or fun to be honest, you need some danger and challenge in the game.

But there was a thread on here a few days ago that was suggesting tethers for EVA, that would seem to be the best solution

There are several EVA tether suggestions on the forum as it gets suggested about every other month.

With KAS you can grab a Command Seat and have a second Kerbal sit in it.

On the planet surface the second Kerbal will fall out as soon as you start walking. I haven't tried this in orbit yet so I can't say for sure if he stays in his seat or not.

I can just see so many kraken attacks happening to your kerbals.

Add KAS and use the command seat and move them around that way. Adding a whole physical element to two kerbals for litterally a VERY select problem isn't really worth it unless it adds something else (KAS)

Does this count as adding something else? :sticktongue:

Kerbals should be able to daisychain together by holding hands.

Yeah, that kind of broad KAS-like system would be useful, and in my opinion, is required for the final release of the game. We need some way of assembling craft in orbit via placing struts and fuel lines, since docking ports, at present, are way too weak to hold large craft together under acceleration. That said, i think they should make docking ports much stronger. Nevertheless, a KAS-like system would make retrofitting existing crafts/rovers doable, and would be useful, especially if a part wasnt unlocked (in campaign mode) when the craft was launched.

I also dont like the idea of tethers-- allowing kerbals to retrieve one another makes running out of RCS fuel mid-EVA relatively easy to recover from with the help of a buddy, but still dangerous...

I would love to try that mod but I'm hitting the memory wall pretty hard with all my current installs.

I dream of a future with a stable x64 unity 5 doing physics on the GPU, but alas, it seems like a pipe dream.

@arkie87

There is a handrail mod that's quite useful for EVA's and they look cool too

In the mean time could you use a Mk2 Cargo bay like a baseball catchers mitt?

Just cover the bottom with stacks of ladders to grab on to.

i suppose that would work (dont need ladders-- just close the bay doors when he gets inside), but i was playing career and dont have much unlocked yet. i suppose i could leave him in orbit for about a year or two and come get him (not playing with life support)...
