undercoveryankee
I'm a little confused by the avionics stuff. Some of the probe cores only seem to be able to handl a few hundred, to a few thousand, kg. Others can handle hundreds or thousands of tons. Is one meant for the launch vehicle and the other for the actual satelite?Exactly. The large-capacity avionics cost you in weight and power, so there's an advantage to be had if you give the payload only enough avionics for its own mass and put the rest on the launch vehicle. NathanKell
Good point, guess we need a later version of the Delta ring as an upgrade. For now you just have to use two.EDIT: Answered the edit, not the original question. Yes, some are meant for probes, some for upper stages, and some for lower stages. You can't just look at part mass and allowed mass, you also have to look at electricity rate. Probe avionics is heavy, does not allow a lot of mass, but has low wattage. LV avionics are much more efficient per ton, but drain an exceptional amount of electricity. You can run them for the fifteen minutes to couple hours of a launch (and transfer burn) but beyond that they'll suck your batteries dry. The Delta K is 2.4m diameter so it looks really strange topped with a pair of 1.4m avionics units. I ended up going with the Agena avionics since it was closer to the right size and provided the tonnage I needed.EDIT: One more suggestion I might make. You've got general avionics packages in 1m, 2m and 3m varieties which is great if you're building your own rockets. But if you're recreating historical rockets (especially US ones from what I can tell), the diameters were rarely whole numbers. For instance, Delta rockets (until Delta III and IV) were all 2.4m diameter, while Titan's were all something like 3.05m. It would be great if we could adjust the diameters of these avionics packages (assuming we are using tweak scale, of course) to match the diameter of the rockets we're putting them on. Capt. Kerk
1) I've been enjoying this mod a lot. It's like starting KSP all over again: everything is mercilessly difficult!2) I have a quick question about rocket design: my rockets' heading always seems to drift after I start my gravity turn. I always need to use SAS/Smart A.S.S./constant slight control adjustments to keep them on course. Is this a problem that can be solved with design or is it just a thing that happens?3) I couldn't find any "official" AutoPruner prune lists for this mod (and will feel kind of dumb if it turns out there is one), so I wrote a horrendous little script to assemble one. chrisl
2) I have a quick question about rocket design: my rockets' heading always seems to drift after I start my gravity turn. I always need to use SAS/Smart A.S.S./constant slight control adjustments to keep them on course. Is this a problem that can be solved with design or is it just a thing that happens?I tend to use Mechjeb to assist with my launches. I normally set orbit altitude at 250km and Limit andle of attack to 10. All other options I leave off (especially Corrective steering). For my ascent path, I set my start altitude somewhere between 0.8-1.8km depending on my SLT, end altitude at 180, final angle at 5-10 and turn shape at 50%. Those settings have worked very well for me though I do take manual control once my Apoapsis is around 200km. But by then I'm usually in space so I don't have to make too many corrections. chrisl
It seems like the tech requirements and specifications for the Atlas engines are a bit out of whack. According to what I'm reading:1- The Atlas SLV-3 flew with an LR-105-5 (386.4kN, 316isp) and LR-89-5 (822.5kN, 290isp) yet neither of these configs are even options. And the LR-105-6, which I'd assume would be a better engine actually has lower thrust and isp.2- The LR-105-7 and LR-89-7 both first flew in 1963 so they should be available somewhere between "Early-Hydrolox" and "Hydrolox". I have both of those researched but still lack the tech for these engine configurations. Base settings put them in vryHeavyRocketry, though I'm not sure what final tech they are ssociated with.On a seperate note, I noticed that all the Atlas fuel tanks seem to have built in avionics packages but none of the Titan tanks do. Not sure if that is an oversite or if the Titan's really did have completely seperate avionics parts.
Capt. Kerk
I'm not sure if this was intended, but it looks like MechJeb can control a craft with insufficient avionics (i.e. one that I can't control manually can be controlled with Smart A.S.S.) mcirish3
Question, about non_suported parts in the recommended list of mods for RO-0. How are they not supported? (FYI I haven't updated to avionics since don't want to break save) In other words are they: not in the right tech node? not recommended for use? (i.e. could remove them from my part list due to lack of realism) Some other reason? Also Comment on KCT. I decided I did not want to use it so I uninstalled via ckan. This bugged the save, load functions in KSP. I ended up doing a full re install without it. Just thought this might be useful for all to know before installing. (FYI I haven't updated to avionics since don't want to break save) In other words are they: not in the right tech node? not recommended for use? (i.e. could remove them from my part list due to lack of realism) Some other reason?Non-supported parts are those that haven't been placed in the tech-tree. Because we're using the Community Tech Tree, they may already have the right position, but they haven't had a human go and verify that. What we love most of all is when we receive contributions of part-placements. All the parts are in an easy-to-edit file, and if you have a free github account you can even make the edits in your web-browser. Once submitted, they go to a bot which automatically checks for common errors, and then our lovely maintainers who verify that everything looks good and merge the changes. Even if it's not clear how much things should cost, just getting part placements contributions is *wonderful*. Indeed, one of the advantages of having the big "not supported by RP-0" labels is that they annoy me so much that I go and place the parts I want to see in my spacecraft. Also Comment on KCT. I decided I did not want to use it so I uninstalled via ckan. This bugged the save, load functions in KSP. I ended up doing a full re install without it. Just thought this might be useful for all to know before installing.Oh dear. That's possibly more a bug in KCT itself, although I believe it can be switched off on a per-save basis in the KCT settings panel, so you can potentially recover your old save if you wish (assuming you started a new career).~ pjf

I am running right at the memory limit and crashes happen about every fourth launch. Am looking for some minor memory gains to reduce the crash tendency. (already using ATM, OPENGL and Pruner.exe) I pruned all the RO_Global fairings and fuel Tanks. Not sure what to hit next.I will check it out placing the node part placement. Though I am not sure how I would determine if it was in the right tech node. I know at least one of the engines seem overpowered for first tier and too efficient to be realistic (not that I would realy know) that is why I asked.Oh dear. It did not break the save load on the game as in time revert, but rather the save load craft buttons in the SPH and VBA. I am guessing it is because KCT takes over these function to a great extent when installed. I am guessing I should report this in the KCT thread as well and I probably will but since it is a recommended mod for RO-0 I thought people might want to know that if they install KCT they better plan on keeping it. I should note KCT worked as intended while installed with no bugs that I noticed.

NathanKell
Capt. Kerk: Not intended, but it is known. Waiting on a new release of MechJeb so we can disable it easily.mcirish3: We'd love to have the help! Stop by #RO on espernet (linked in the Realism Overhaul OP to a webchat page if you don't have an IRC client) and I or one of my compatriots will be happy to walk you through things.Meanwhile, if you're using OpenGL mode, pruning parts isn't going to help very much--the part textures already shouldn't be taking up RAM anyway. What you might try is deleting the biome maps for the bodies you don't visit much (or swap them in and out dependening on which you're visitng). You can find them in CustomBiomes/Plugins/PluginData/ and subfolders, just rename the pngs to .bak for the bodies you want to disable. That'll free up a fair amount of RAM. Carlo
Hi all! I'm having quite a lot of troubles in the first part of the carrier, the turbojet engines that I have to use just blow up everything they are attached to, and there are no radiators et similia to use, to keep everything cool. It is supposed to be so? is a bug? I have done something wrong? THank you!
NathanKell
Turbojet? What turbojet? There should be no jets available whatsoever in the starting node, and (if you have AJE) a few available if you start unlocking the aero nodes. Can you name exactly what part(s) you're using and what mods? Note that if a part says "non-RP0" believe it.

For clarification, after removing KCT you could no longer save or load craft? I'd love to see logs from this, but I doubt you have them anymore. If anyone else in this thread sees similar behavior in the future, please let me know in the KCT thread. KCT doesn't actually touch the load or save craft buttons (except to disable them when a KCT window is open in the editor, or when "editing" a craft) so I don't know off the top of my head what would have caused that issue.Maybe it's my secret way of locking people in once they start using KCT... /s I wouldn't actually do that People should be able to add and remove mods whenever they want, so I don't want to wreck any saves on accident by removing my mods.Speaking of KCT, have you guys reworked your KCT configs yet? I've got a couple changes I want to make tonight for a future... thing... (there's a day coming up soon that I want to have a little fun on, but I need to add the code into the next release ) and then I think it's ready for release. I don't want to update and then suddenly have things break for you.

magico13
Have not yet, but I'll put something together to be ready for ya. You can always keep everything how you have it now, but you'll still need to make at least a small update since I removed the separate max values in the formula cfg in favor of using the min() function. If you don't change accordingly, the prices will just keep going up when people buy upgrades, so it shouldn't (hopefully) break anything too badly if someone uses an older config. Then you can spend some time making bigger changes later if you want. Unfortunately, the current release version isn't forward compatible, so you can't put out that config until the update :/ I could maybe add some functionality to read in the "max" values and wrap the existing formula in a min() with that max. I'll actually probably do that since I'm afraid people aren't going to remove their old configs when they update (especially if they install through CKAN). So it looks like you won't have to worry too much after all, so take your time, haha Edit: Build 98 of KCT has code that should auto-update any existing configs, so no need to rush. Things should be exactly the same for end users after they update, meaning you can take your time with playing with the other options if you want. Sorry if I made you feel rushed at all! NathanKell
Sorry, missed this.It seems like the tech requirements and specifications for the Atlas engines are a bit out of whack. Not sure if that is an oversite or if the Titan's really did have completely seperate avionics parts.LR-105 and LR-89 are both kerolox engines. They will be in the regular rocketry nodes, not the hydrolox nodes (hydrolox nodes are for hydrolox). According to this table, which we've found on the whole to be the most accurate, the LR-105-5 did not have those specs, and neither did the LR-89-5 (those are closest to the specs of the LR-105-NA-7.1 and LR-89-NA-6 respectively). The Titan upper stages do. Titan was a two-stage LV (later, three or four stage) and the main avionics were on the upper stage (the one you put the LR-91 on).

Can you expand a little? All we have now is Areobee engine and Tiny Tim rocket from the starting tech. I got myself into a problem where its barely impossible to even get up and finish the first sounding rocket record contract because of no control. Only one way to get it... Well either cheat or have good luck with it. I see no other way around
