That's 242 funds per crew report.. I could slap on more batteries (they're massless anyhow) for more endurance, but it's rare for it to even use half of it's power before I have a solar-powered thermometer probe to replace it with that has unlimited endurance.

Are you talking about the 2HOT Thermometer? I'm not sure how that solves your power problem -- does it have some sort of intrinsic solar panel? Or does it somehow let you capture science? (I'm new to career mode so sorry if this is a dumb question.)

With a thermometer you can do infinite science without having to send up a Kerbal to do crew reports. With solar power, that probe can run forever. The two are both needed for infinite science contract completing, but each fulfills a different role.
