Another use for the 'Report Post' button.

After some discussion in other threads with moderators and...kinda gagging at the 'General Thread for everything you must ask moderators to do with threads', instead of having that sole post just for that, why not make the 'Report Post' button serve that purpose as well, instead of having the user copy the thread link and post in another thread that, for example, a thread should be moved?

Crimson Sunrise, I think something might have gotten lost in translation one way or another in the other thread, so just in case there was any misunderstanding, I'll clarify exactly how the Post Report function works.

When a user submits a post report, the forum gives us moderators three things:

1. An automatic link to the post in question.

2. A full-text quote of the post.

3. The custom message provided by the reporter.

You can very easily already use the Report Post function to request a particular thread be closed or moved (for instance, if you're turning over curatorship of an add-on to someone else in a new thread, or if you misposted your thread in the wrong section). As you can put anything you want in the custom message, all you'd have to do is say something to the effect of "Hey, I want this thread I started to be closed / moved for reasons x, y, and z. Can y'all do that for me?"

The public thread is simply another avenue of approach, and it helps keep public thread maintenance requests confined to one place on the forums rather than filling up the Kerbal Networks with separate little threads whenever someone posts that they need a thread of their own locked or moved.

Hope this clears up any misunderstandings that may have arisen :)

Just read the highlighted text and tell me when any user will figure out that you can ask for threads to be moved using it instead of looking for the thread in here I mentioned or just give up and hope someone does the job for him/her.

No need to make a fuss of it. I'm sure KasperVld will gladly change it. Though I can confirm the moderators do get a handy load of reports asking for threads to be moved/closed :P About half of them or so are about this, except in periods of... strong winds.

I reported one of my own posts when I realized it was off-topic for the thread. It's a violation of rule 2.4a:

Users must make an effort to place a new thread in the right forum section. Posts deemed to be in an incorrect section will be moved to a proper one

I'd also like to note this handy section of the Community Rules:

2.4 Language, placement spelling and grammar

  1. Users must make an effort to place a new thread in the right forum section. Posts deemed to be in an incorrect section will be moved to a proper one;
  2. Users must attempt to use proper grammar and spelling in all messages. Txt-speak, 1337-speak and other exclusionary forms of speech are prohibited; and
  3. All messages outside of the international sections must be in English.

Therefore, using it to report a misplaced thread (even if it's your own) is technically not outside the scope of the rules as written.

EDIT: Ninja'd.

I'm not making a fuss about it. I just don't think it's necessary to reinvent the wheel when the forum has a function which does that already. And if I wasn't informed that you could ask for threads to be moved using the 'Report Post' button and only went by the text I highlighted, I would never use it like that.

I'm pretty sure you can count with one hand the number of people that read the rules.

In my experience, even if it the exact list of things you could and couldn't do with the Report Post button was thoroughly laid out, most people would ignore it and go on their gut. Don't know why, but people do tend to ignore a lot of the helpful information we have written all over the place. We get people reporting things for all sorts of reasons, some sensible, some less than such.

I doubt it'd make a great deal of difference whether that description was changed overmuch. :)

Maybe because the 'information all over the place' is not easily visible?

The information all over the place is very visible. The rules are not only stuck at the top of every single forum and subforum there is, but they are also presented to you in their full when you register on the forum. Not only that, but there are countless amount of threads stuck in various forums which all aim to help you around the forum and tell you what to post where. Really, vexx right on that, most of what a moderator can write will be ignored. It can't really be made more visible It all relies on the user reading it, and unfortunately, only about 10% of the community really does.

Okay. But the thread where you ask to move other threads, etc. which is the focal point of my post, only exists in this section of the forums.

Indeed. It's up to users which of the available channels they use. We provide that thread as a catch-all, but it remains in the proper section for such requests. Having something like that pinned to the top of every forum would get a bit silly, since we'd need six eyes to watch them all.

In addition to the Report Post and the Need a Thread Moved/etc.? thread, the moderators are all forum users; PM contact is always available. There are plenty of channels available to contact staff, where it is necessary. Any more would be at best simply superfluous, I think. :)

This thread is quite old. Please consider starting a new thread rather than reviving this one.
