Need help for my spaceplane and FAR.

Recommended Posts

cosmos,

Sorry, I know I have zero experience with FAR, but I need to point this out:

FAR derates turbojet thrust, so you can't have a turbojet powered spaceplane like you do in stock.

You'll need to use either RAPIERs or a turbojet/ rocket hybrid with a lot more DV from rockets.

I know a guy who's really good at FAR spaceplanes. I'll see if I can get him to help you.

Best,

I see you're trying to exploit intake spamming. This doesn't really work in FAR. I'd suggest reducing your intakes so that it flames out around 30km and 1700m/s. Slashy is right that you will need rockets to make it to orbit. Two popular options are rapiers or turbojets + a nuke. Rapiers are better within Kerbin and turbojets + nuke are better for interplanetary spaceplanes.

Okay, to start with:

* Too many intakes. It has massive drag. One ramscoop per engine is plenty for an atmospheric ship.

* No rockets that I can see. Not a spaceplane yet.

* Not enough lift. There's barely any wing on that thing.

* No lateral stability at all. Planes have tailfins for a reason.

* Barely adequate thrust. Two turbojets are enough to propel a plane with normal sized wings; they're massively inadequate for an ultra-low drag/lift design like this.

Have a look at post #2 and #3 of the Kerbodyne thread linked below.

Make sure you install Kerbal Pilot Assistant first, and cut the kp/kd values of SAS to 1/3 of default. Climb to 5,000m before going supersonic if you don't want to blow up the airframe.

Change the cones to ramscoops, change the outer RAPIERs to LV-T45s. It'll be slower, but it should still work. Flick the rockets on for a second to give a little boost at takeoff.

You probably don't have the inline docking port either; change that for a small tank or a nacelle.

wanderfound,

A little background:

He was trying to build a spaceplane according to my tutorial, not realizing that while it would be just fine in stock, it wouldn't work for FAR.

That's why I asked you to help out; you're the FAR spaceplane guru.

Best,

Fair enough; no aggro intended. :)

This is the classic issue with stock; the tricks that you learn there are actively counterproductive when you go to a less unrealistic model. Things that should be intuitive need to be relearnt.

Specialist speedster ... How do you do that ? You mean having a pilot that specialise in speed ? if so how, if not you mean a fast craft ?

I would guess a fast craft. Probably one with very sleek wings, plenty of thrust and enough intakes to run a little higher in the atmosphere than your typical spaceplane :)
