Ultimate Orbital Intercept

The challenge: Launch 2 rockets, with or without Mechjeb into opposite orbits, heading at each other. Try to get them to pass as closely together as possible without hitting each other.

The rules: Any Mods, as long as they are not overpowered. Pictures not required.

The Scores:--Excalibur-- 167.4 METERS from other ship

--TGMB1-- 256 METERS from other ship

--dryerlint-- 432 Meters From other ship

--ModeSix--1111.1 METERS from other ship

--r4m0n--2.0KM From Other Ship

--Cooly568--2.1KM From Other ship

--Bellaby--2.5 KM From Other Ship

My distance was 2.1 KM from other ship, can you beat it?

Haven\'t tried that, but wouldn\'t it be quite easy to make a westward circular orbit and then launch a MechJeb rocket to that altitude?

I tried MechJeb only once, but it did its job really well, and the orbit was within 0.5km from the set value.

MechJeb sometimes doesn\'t work for me.

I think allowing MechJeb in this one makes things too easy, here is the result of my first try with a 100km, 0 and 180 inclination launch, with absolutely no correction after achieving orbit:

That probably isn\'t even the closest approach, but I guess I got lucky that it was in the screenshot at all, that thing was FAST.

I mean SUPER CLOSE approach, like several tens or meters away from other ship, But you are now in first place. :)

Take a picture while the ship is heading towards yours, at closest approach, and as it heads away. Make sure the prograde indicator can be seen on the navball on the active ship, and compare the METs. You might need to get the approach and departure pictures from some distance to get clearly different METs, but it can easily be done. ;)

I think I\'ll try this soon.

i guess the only way to truly prove that that is either via a video. Or by uploading the persistent.sfs files so that people who might not think its legit can check for themselves?

But i would like to think that in a decent community, small challenges like this would involve a certain amount of trust/honour.

then again it is the internet I suppose.

I agree with these rules. :)

Here is mine, I have no idea if it got closer than this, but I think it must have, I just have no idea if it is possible to slow it down at all lower than 1.0 speed.

I have 2 screenshots of the rockets in orbit, showing them coming together and the time increasing as they get closer to prove they are on opposite orbits.

Officially 1111.1m distance, I will try to get a screenshot of it being closer.

I hope RCS and fins was within the allowable mods.

I also have an idea for an additional challenge. See how close we can get 2 rockets to pass by each other in Munar orbit. Who\'s with me on this? :D

edit: I guess the orbital screenshots don\'t really prove anything, ah well, you will have to trust my honesty.

  • 2 weeks later...

Noob question, but are you using a mod that gives you more/better information on objects around you?

It is not a noob question. It is mechjeb. Hey I didn\'t know about mechjeb in the beginning either.
