Gravitational Data in Flight

Recommended Posts

I've got a couple missions that require gravitational data to be collected while in flight. Every time I try to collect the gravitational data in flight (even in the node requiring it), it tells me that data cannot be collected at this time. Jeb is busy flying the aircraft, so I brought along Bob, the scientist. My theory is that Bob is too terrified to do anything other than gawk in horror out of the cockpit windows, but when safely on the ground, he's OK. How can I motivate the adorable little Kerbal to do his job?

Gravity data should be collectible in any situation you're required to run it in. Are you running any mods that may have changed that?

It doesn't match exactly what you report, but send a Kerbal out there (Bob will go if you prod him enough) and right click the device and see if you can collect the data from it. If so, then it's just full of the single gravity reading you were able to take before. You can take one more before it fills again, and then you've got to send Bob out again (he'll get used to it eventually) to collect it again. Repeat forever.

Or, if you don't care about the actual data and just want to complete the contract, you should be able to right click the detector and "review data". Then either transmit it to get rid of it, or delete it.

Some scientific instruments will fail to work if you've tried to use them where they can't get a reading but the negative gravioli detector works in most places apart from flying. Even so you could try returning to the space centre and back to try to reset the instrument.

I'm using the B9 Aerospace mod's sensor pod that has a whole bunch of sensors wrapped up in one. All the other sensors work, and the gravity sensor works when I'm landed, but it wont take a reading in flight. the first thing I did was to make sure the data had been cleared. That didn't do the trick. Normally I do just reset the sensor after getting the data. I've got my outsourced R&D strategy turned way up, so the 5 - 10 science points I get from sensor readings are pretty piddly compared to completing the contract.

The contract specifically says flying, so orbital or sub-orbital wouldn't work. Sending Bob on an EVA in flight just seems cruel, especially considering that most of the readings are supposed to be done >18,000m, at that altitude they are usually cruising around 1km/s. I doubt Bob could hold it together out there, he's got enough trouble keeping it together in the cockpit.

If a contract has a requirement of "in flight", or "in flight above 19400m", it will accept ***any*** height above the limit, as long as you are in the correct planet's Sphere of Influence.

Yes, I have done a Crew Report above 16200m at location DV10T on Kerbin.... while heading out to Duna already past MinMus.

As previously noted, the Gravioli detector doesn't work "in flight". It needs to be "in space", if not specifically "in orbit".

Luckily for you, the contract is merely distinguishing between "landed" and "not-landed" when it refers to "in flight". "In orbit" is perfectly okay as far as the contract is concerned. So don't overthink it.
