Not really, you just need to have a center of mass (CoM) on the same line than the center of thrust in KSP

Which one? Most are between 150-300

I'm going to have to wait for better Munar lighting conditions for photo ops before release, but this is already tested as VTOL... and quite a bit more than that:

Following a slight "mishap" I built a 2 seat rescue VTOL. Good thing jet engines work underwater on Kerbin :)

Also, the original version of my 'Horseshoe' plane. Used to deliver rovers around Kerbin. Can then kneel down and re-dock for recovery and onward transport:
