Not really, you just need to have a center of mass (CoM) on the same line than the center of thrust in KSP

Which one? Most are between 150-300

I used to make heavy-lifter Jet-powered VTOL SSTOs: (Okay, they aren't technically VTOLs, they are VTVLs(Verticle takeoff, Verticle Landing) but close enough!)

There's a thin line between VTOLs and jetpacks, and I think I crossed it. Still, though, isn't this thing neat?!

That's actually the same as VTOL (Vertical Take-Off & Landing)

This stabojet trademarked VTOL is from waaaay back (0.22 I think) but still one of my favorites, capable of reaching a 100x100 km orbit with ease and landing back at KSC without parachutes (though it does have a couple of chutes in case of emergency or general laziness):

Following a slight "mishap" I built a 2 seat rescue VTOL. Good thing jet engines work underwater on Kerbin

Also, the original version of my 'Horseshoe' plane. Used to deliver rovers around Kerbin. Can then kneel down and re-dock for recovery and onward transport:

Interesting idea putting the VTOL engine of the second plane in a cargo bay to save on drag! It makes it look really futuristic too

I think that something that takes of and lands on its end is easier, if a bit hard to land
