Hiatsu2k8
This might be a dumb question but I was wondering what the difference is between the S.A.S. and advanced SAS module?
sjwt
The SAS applies magical toque to the craft, to try and keep it on course.ASAS is basically a computer that alters the inputs by the Kerbals who fly it delivering a smother locked flight path, as well as controlling Winglets. You only get the benefit from one ASAS, but you can have as many SAS as you need to control a craft that keeps going off course. UmbralRaptor
SAS uses built in reaction control wheels (sort of).ASAS uses whatever it can grab (command pod reaction control wheels, RCS, winglets, thrust vectoring engines...)
Hiatsu2k8
Thanks, I sort of get what your saying. I also was wondering what thrust vectoring and gimble rating mean.
noneyabidnis
Thrust vectoring means you are able to increase engine power and decrease it. It\'s like a gas pedal. It\'s different than Solid Rocket Boosters which just run at full strength until they run out of gas.Gimble rating is referring to how much the part of the rocket that spits out fire can move around. The more Gimble, the more control your rockets have during flight maneuvers and landing. Of course, too much Gimble, you can oversteer and wind up losing control and crashing. Thrust vectoring just means that the direction that the thrust is going can be moved. For ingame purposes, it means a non-zero gimbal rating. Zephram Kerman
Very nice animation Sordid. In other words, the engine nozzle can pivot, so that the thrust comes out at an angle. That helps steer the craft, but only while the engines are running. It looks like this: (Skip to time 1:48.)
nerdboy64
Despite the similar names, the regular SAS unit is a sort of gyroscope thing, which makes rotating the craft in space significantly easier. The Advanced SAS is actually a computer which coordinates wings and RCS thrusters (when they are turned on) to keep you on course. Unlike the regular SAS, the Advanced SAS is useless without wings and/or RCS.
