Nuclear Powered Icebreaker (Infinite range!)

As you probably know, ships are possible in KSP. The easiest way to do this is put a jet engine on some high-tolerance parts, land in the water, and go.

A Conventional Ship - Note Smoke Trail from Jet Engines.

However, the day has come where Naval technology advances, thanks to Admiral Kerman Krickhover, who has designed a nuclear powerplant for our surface fleet.

This ship is moving- but there's no engines! How is that possible?pqUewpV.jpg?1

HOW TO USE: This ship doesn't have wheels - it was designed to be hyperedited to the water to save part count. If you do not have this addon, it's fine, you will just have to add some landing gear and rover wheels to the bottom of the hull and "Drive" it over to the water.

The ship utilizes a nuclear SAS stack - to use, stage to decouple, and then switch to this part. Hit "Alt-E" And hold - this starts adjusting the trim of the powerplant. Hold it untill it trims all the way to one side. Make sure SAS is off. The SAS stack should start spinning. Now, switch back to the ship, and you will be moving, and you can just use normal controls to steer. To stop, switch back to the SAS stack, and hit "Alt-X", which will stop it spinning, and thus turn off thrust. Remember the SAS stack and the ship are two different parts, so the load Kraken might try to nab it sometime :D

The ship has a small hangar in the rear, and the Mk 3 cargo bays open to facilitate engine viewing (although i do not recommend opening them while engine is running).

Range is infinite, top speed is about 14 m/s - which isn't huge, but enough to get you where you want to go. I don't think physical warp is a good idea.

Nah- mods let this slide this is an INTERESTING thread! Definitely- Good Job Zekes :) you've outdone yourself here!

thanks - I just now need to learn how to make lighter and simpler boats. The main problem with this drive is it takes a lot of vertical space - it can't touch the water. So I can't really make smaller ships around it (I need to use those Mk3 cargo bays).

Make a catamaran with Structural Fuselages, and have two of these drives on the main body. :P

Then you cover everything with armor, like you usually do.

I was thinking about that, or have one drive on each float, and carry missiles down the spine.
