Seems that .Net framework is becoming open source and corss platform (soon ?)

Being under the MIT license is good and it does mean there won't be any license issues using it with GPL software, but only the core is free, everything else is either "shared source" or is proprietary.

So while nice, there will still need to be non-Microsoft compilers and IDE's to work with it, that is where Mono and Monodevelop can come in, we're unlikely to see Visual Studio free and open source any time soon if at all.

Microsoft did not start opening C# last November. Even before that C# was a ECMA/ISO standard. Mono is not exactly young either and the MIT license will just help making the mono lib better.

Now what i'd like to see is Xamarin opening up their licensing term. The amount money they ask is plain stupid.

Lol, obviously, why would they open source visual studio, they sell it for money.

I believe that while the standard may have been open source, Microsofts actual implementation of the code was not, which is what they just made open source.
