STS-7/E Space Shuttle (Stock NASA Replica) Still Flies in KSP 1.4.3 - Re-enters Like the Real Thing!

Is it intended for the shuttle to be missing any form of nose landing gear? Noticed this when I tried to land, all crew survived except the one in the cargo area.

You know, I was reserving post #100 (which is the entry level to being nominated for Epic Engineer in the Master Showcase thread), to post a magnum opus of magnum opuses - an epic video I'm working on (now 80% complete) showcasing the all-new and yet-to-be-released STS-4 Space Shuttle with sub updates and and all new amazing stock elevator sub, but...

Your support request is more important. ;)

Anyways, yes it's intended for the nose landing gear to be recessed into the cockpit via the offset tool. You will need to hit key G for landing gear to deploy all three. I'm not aware of there being a defect in the STS-3 gear design, but just in case your copy has it bugged, you might need to zoom into the cockpit, and enable the nose landing gear for the Landing Gear action group. STS-4 is right around the corner and it is perfect. I mean it. Over three weeks of testing it and putting it through its paces while shooting 100s of video takes (for a 9 min movie), it will probably stay STS-4 until 1.0 comes out. I hope to release it this week along with the subs, and my all-new amazing awesome epic STS Space Shuttle showcase movie. Stay tuned. Let me know if you have any other issues with the STS-3.

Ingima, here is DM Bases and Co. It needs some working, but I am on the right track. I am glad to hear that I will be making payloads for you. I am thinking of making payloads for almost every shuttle mission.

Everybody else: This shuttle can survive (mostly) a water landing at 25-29mps. A challenge: Deliver another spacecraft into orbit; a Soyuz, a Orion, whatever! I just enjoy this shuttle so much!

I really like what you have been doing with this! impressive work!

Thank you Sampa! I like the feedback. Makes all this work worthwhile. Video soon!

I have arranged to render inigma's shuttle in Blender.

Results coming soon.

Starwhip and DMSP, your advanced copies of the unreleased STS-4 and its secret subassembly have been PMmed to you for your contributions to this project.

Everyone else, STS-4 will be released, video or not, by Friday this week if not earlier. Keep a look out!

In the works... got some troubleshooting to do and got to learn how to fly the thing (last flights, the shuttle when out of control shortly after launch and had to abort the flight... minor damage to the airframe but all members of the crew survived)

Glad to hear it! I've landed in the ocean many times... heh. And yes the cockpit always seems to survive if you do it right. :)

Thanks for the quick reply. It was a bugged download. It flies wonderfully and I am currently building a station using just the STS-3. I plan on entering it in the grand orbital station challenge.

That sounds awesome! Come back here and post a link to your entry so others can know!

Thank you SO MUCH Starwhip. You're awesome!

I did discover this:

Looks like the fuselodge for the OMS is shorter than the adapter plate and the nosecone, and thus looks disconnected from both. Is this something that can be fixed? If so, then you'd have an absolutely perfect render. Here is my cropped version if you want an idea on the crop result I was looking for:

question, for flying this, I am presuming I need to adjust the thrust settings for the 3 main engines. What do you suggest the setting be? This is merely because all the problems I have found appear to be launch stability AFTER leaving the pad. (almost immediately after leaving the pad, the vehicle lurches "forward", in relation to orbiter orientation, I can get to a fairly strong altitude, but is otherwise uncontrollable)

Fuel load is your only real launch tweak. Try using less fuel first. Then add until you find the balance. SAS always needs to be on. If you really want to get technical, try to move just a bit of fuel from the top to lower tanks. Also load your payload lower. Also feel free to engineer payload bay ballast. ;)

I find the balance usually by only adjusting fuel amounts. Experiment. It should work to make the lurch less.

I engineered this shuttle with the idea to keep it simple - namely only fuel amount tweaking is all that is or should be needed.

Ok, I'll try that. What if I am launching under the direct control of the Mechjeb computers (I do NOT allow Jebediah to control any vehicle this complex during launch)?

STS-4 is designed to address MechJeb control issues with undesired roll, but MJ launch lurch with STS-3 should be fixed by fuel tweaking as explained above. Let me know how it goes. What is your cargo? If you share a craft with your custom cargo I'll look at it and tweak the fuel for you and share it back so it flies right with MJ if you are still having issues.

Ok, at the time of testing, I was pretty much using an empty cargo bay. The only thing in it was the docking port and the MMUs (like if I were going on a satellite retrieval/repair flight).

Oh the STS Operations Module? Fill the middle external tank.

Also, just in case, I am going to add several linear parachutes along the length of the bay, in case I lose control of the craft as a glider (as happens frequently for me)

Hey now there's an idea for a new subassembly... a parachute module... hmmm. I could add it as a sub to the ops module sub or extend it and release it as an ops and rescue subassembly... what do you think?
