STS-7/E Space Shuttle (Stock NASA Replica) Still Flies in KSP 1.4.3 - Re-enters Like the Real Thing!

Not the only complaint. The biggest really is that they are way too tall compared to the RL shuttle. Looks like a chicken coming in for a landing. (Try add medium gear, and you'll see what I mean. lol). I just tested a different design 10 min ago. ew... can you make them look like the real shuttle? Maybe I'm just being too picky. If I use the new gear, it reduces parts by 6 count.

The real shuttle actually does kinda look chicken-ish coming in for landing :P the main gear is surprisingly tall, the medium gear for the mains and the small gear for the nose gives the shuttle about the right "sitting on the runway" angle that the real one does, maybe just a little exaggerated. It also helps a lot with letting you flare more during landings thanks to the extra height!

I tried the one with solids like you told me to and well... I crashed it twice in a row, realized there had to be something I was doing wrong, and quit and made a SSTO of my own.

Is it meant to want to pitch down so hard? (By down I mean up, I was taking it to orbit ET to the sky like the real thing). By the time I had run the solids down, I couldn't keep her from pointing to the ground, and aerodynamics killed her after that. Maybe it is an automated pitching system and I should have activated something to compensate? I will be the first to admit, I didn't read the manual.

I'll try again sometime, and if I still can't make her go, I will just put the assemblies for my base pack inside a couple of them (yes, version 1.0 is basically done, testing boosters and Eagles now), and send you the files back like you asked me to ages ago so you can balance it and/or put them in the LRB version. It'll take at least two shuttle bays on account of volume, probably three if I put the construction rover and everything.

Rune. I wonder if I could design some short of landing pack that fits a bay and can set down all the modules...

STEALTH Update? Wait, are you referring to the STS-5 or the act of updating itself?

STS-5 file updated and uploaded (written over).

Activate SAS and start engines at 2/3 throttle. Roll tail to ocean and throttle up. If you dont overdo the controls which has the unfortunate effect of disabling SAS, the boosters will naturally curve you to 45 deg by 17k and burn out.

Oh, 2/3rd throttle. That would be a thing I didn't do. Then again, I could set her on the 90º tail to the ocean and everything, it's after that that keeping "W" pressed 100% of the time (I've flown a misbehaving shuttle or two in my day) wasn't enough.

Rune. I'll try again!

After your roll and throttle up, leave the controls alone. SAS only works best when you minimize flight inputs. Remember, you're flying a 42 ton fuel depot payoad up on your back...upside down in a craft that is stressing the limits. Flight inputs during max q is not advised. Simply complete your roll with tail on the 90 and nose within 0-10 deg and you should be fine to throttle up and leave her alone. With any other payload you need not worry about flight inputs.

Wow, it's really great to see you've been able to do it, inigma! It's been a goal of yours ever since release, and it's amazing to see it done. :) Kudos once more!

Also, I traced this up in Autodesk Sketchbook.. Thought I'd show it to you. It's a "cartoonized" image of your Shuttle.

Yes, I know it is minimalistic and bland.. I am really not good at backgrounds.

Thanks!

Hey that looks awesome!

Adding it to OP.

For Rune: Max Q

Ridin' the boosters up with the STS Fuel Pod payload in the bay. Dunna toucha de flight inputs for long or u will wish you hadn't.

A. Turn on SAS.

B. Solid booster variant requires a starting reduced throttle throttle of 1/3rd as throttle is used to control pitch during launch. Liquid booster variant requires start at full throttle.

0. Spacebar to drop STS Elevator if attached. Again to launch.

1. Roll straight up to 15k, tail facing ocean. Solid booster pilots throttle up after roll.

A. Turn on SAS.

B. Solid booster variant requires starting game throttle of 2/3rds. Liquid variant requires starting at full throttle.

1. Somewhat immediately after liftoff (or after you stop gawking at the sheer power of the scene) but before 3km begin your roll program, tail facing ocean.

What exactly do you mean by begin to roll tail facing ocean? Does that mean to roll 180 degrees so that the shuttle will be headed easterly after the SRBs auto-pitch the craft? Isn't it easier to just rotate the craft 180 degrees in the VAB?

It is easier, yes, and you can, but the real NASA space shuttle had a required roll program. Most players want to fly the shuttle like the real thing, so that is why it is published this way. But of course you can change it.

I think the only problem with STS 5E was the lag. I aborted, and I managed 2 FPS on the way back down to landing. Other than that, it's pretty freaking awesome!

Thanks for the report!

Try the STS-5. Less parts. Easier to control on laggy comps. Same performance without the eye candy SRBs of the 5E.
