MK3 spaceplane wheels?!

Recommended Posts

How do you put landing gear on a stock MK3 spaceplane?! I put the big rovemax model XL3 because they were the only things that seem to fit size wise and the only thing with a large tolerance. when I try to take off the wheels simply break one by one and the vehicles blows up down the runway. Usually says structural link fail between it and the body... How do you use these wheels or what do you put on an MK3 body for runway takeoffs?

Use the small landing gears. Put them on a hardpoint or something to create some distance between the runway and the fuselage (needed for when you rotate). Make sure they are EXACTLY level. And you're probably going to need more than 3. Though in all honesty, a 100 tonne plane lands fine on just 3 sets of two small landing gears.

The rover wheels aren't capable of dealing with the speeds required for take-off and landing.

I wanted to make a plane that could land and have the electric based steering for exploring.

I built a couple of small planes with a pair of rover wheels level with but slightly higher than the nose landing gear. Land the plane on the landing gear as usual, then retract the nose gear only, which lowers the rover wheels to the ground.

If you also want to use it for roving, put the rover wheels up a little higher than the landing gear.

Once you come to a stop... gear up, plane plops down on rover wheels, and off you rove! Deploy gear to raise of the rover-wheels again.

Another solution is to go VTOL.

A couple of weeks back there was a discussion about how to re-scale the landing gear size to address this very issue - you're going to need the Small Gear Bays to do what you want to do and the Small Gear Bays kinda suck at the job when it comes to Mk3 Spaceplanes on account of the fact that they're, well, small. Here's the procedure:

1) Find the folder "GameData\Squad\Parts\Wheel\SmallGearBay\" in your KSP directory.

2) Copy \SmallGearBay\ and its contents into "GameData\mycustomparts\" or some other directory of your choosing (under Gamedata).

3) Open "smallGearBay.cfg" with any text editor (Notepad is fine).

5) Change the line that says "name = SmallGearBay" to any other name that isn't used by the game, ie "name = LargeGearBay"

4) Underneath the line that says "scale = 1" add a line that says "rescaleFactor = 2.5"

5) Change the line "title = ..." to some other name. This is the name that will appear in the VAB, so it is useful to be able to identify your new part (it will have the same icon as the old one). Though this isn't technically necessary. You may also tweak the "cost = ..." field, if you care about that. You could change the "mass = ..." and other parameters too.

6) Save your changes and load up the game.

I've done this myself and I can verify that it does work as advertised. Doesn't require any official "mods" either. Just remember to unlock the steering and disable the brakes on the nose wheel in the VAB and you're good to go.
