KSP Freezing.

Recommended Posts

I have a fresh install of KSP and it basically freezes if i do anything after the game loads into the menu. I'm really desperate. when this happens i have to restart the computer because nothing responds. I am completely new to linux as i just dual booted to play ksp. I have looked through the linux thread and nothing has solved my issue. Here are my specs:

Specs: GPU:R9 280x/ CPU:i5-4670k/ RAM:8gb/ OS: Ubuntu 14.04/ using fglrx proprietery driver thing/ playing at 2560x1440 resolution.

Same issue. It's not the KSP that freezes, it's the GPU/Xorg from what I can tell.

First of all, have you tried the open source driver? It works for me, but the lack of anti aliasing makes the game kind of hideous.

Here's what I know so far:

-Nothing in ksp's log files

-Nothing in kern.log based on time stamps.

-Nothing I could find in Xorg.0.log, but no time stamps and I'm a linux noob so could've missed something. Not the whole thing since it wouldn't fit, but this should be the relevant part http://pastebin.com/pzG9KU3A

-Same problem in the two latest versions of ubuntu, reinstalling ubuntu doesn't fix it.

-Same problem in both Ubuntu and Mint.

-Aimlessly fiddling with random settings doesn't fix it. Neither does trying again and praying :P

Specs: GPU: Radeon HD 7800/ CPU: i5-3750k/ RAM: 16gb/ OS: two versions of Ubuntu, newest Mint/ Driver: fglrx, fglrx-updates and the newest driver from AMD website/ Resolution: 1920x1080

Apologies for the vague version numbers. I know I'd hate being given some, so if you think they actually make a difference, let me know and I'll go check them.

When the XOrg session freezes try the three key press Ctrl+Alt+F1 to get back to a text console.

Alternately try Ctrl+Alt+Bksp to kill the X session.

I'm afraid I don't know where Ubuntu stores it's system logs, I'd try looking for /var/log/syslog or /var/log/messages and see if there is anything helpful. Xorg.0.log usually only has startup info for the X session.

Also look in you home folder to see if there is a log file form the X session.

I'm using a NVidia GPU (GTX970) on Slackware64 14.1 and don't have your problem.

I haven't tried that i don't think! Any chance you could explain to me how to use that? As a complete linux noob i kinda just read tutorials and troubleshooted for days to get everything up and running and now i'm here.

This may help you, don't forget to reboot afterwards :)

How to install proprietary drivers in Ubuntu.

I think i figured out how to switch to the xorg open source driver. But when i switch to it my desktop and all of my programs looks like this http://postimg.org/image/ffnpuwstt/full/ lol. If i use nomodeset it goes to the desktop normally but then i have like 2 fps in ksp.

There's a way to do it automatically with just a few clicks in ubuntu. I can't recall the exact names of the menus, but it should be something along the lines of Control Panel -> Software -> Additional Drivers, after which you pick the one that isn't fglrx/fglrx-updates, click apply changes and reboot. That's not how a linux guru would do it, but it's fast and easy.

That being said, I'm not sure if it'll allow you to do it after installing things manually, and if that's the case I better let someone who actually knows what they're doing do the explaining, just in case I accidentally break something :P

That's odd, though I have heard of some people having problems with it. I suppose you could try installing it manually, but you best ask someone else to explain that. I'm fine trying things on my computer, but I'm not risking someone else's.
