Modding Community Observations

Did I say all mods have to be paid for? no just the premium ones.

Define premium mod.

If I were to charge for further updates to mods I make, I'd make nothing other than an annoyed player-base. And Squad's lawyers happy probably.

The few that could be (Realism Overhaul, Interstellar, USI) seem to be doing just fine already.
Mods like those are generally team efforts. Back when Interstellar was getting off the ground any given day in #KSPModders was a long string of talk between FractalUK and some other contributor. Realism Overhaul, and the suite of mods surrounding it, is a community unto itself, with many, many contributors. As for Roverdude's stuff, well, let's just say I would have burnt out hard already on his workload, and since I don't use any of his mods I have no idea what the community surrounding them is like or whether he has other contributors (CRP is a notable exception in my knowledge gap, which has many contributors). Oh - the USI stuff is 99% solo work with the exceptions of Karbonite's models (which are mostly Nertea and nli2work), ART's models (because WaRi is awesome), and bits of code here and there from pull requests, etc. (from fine folks like PrivateFlip, Marce, Cyrik, etc.). Tho I do usually chuckle when folks refer to it as the USI team :D

Paid mods are a bad idea - do donations. I can most definitely say that on those days I get a couple of donations, I almost immediately go right back to making more stuff (plus it pays for the beer and the dropbox account). I'd rather folks play with the stuff and if they find it worthwhile, toss a few dollars over (the exception being Karbonite, where thus far the proceeds have been going to charity).

Regarding us running out of stuff to do... the only reason I've slowed down a bit is because I am focusing on stuff for stock right now. Once that's done, I have a backlog of new things to unleash :D

I know I will get some blowback but IMO I really think the problem is free mods. Mod developers aren't making any money and it's time consuming on their part. I'm sure they have day jobs.

Now if they could incorporate a mod store (Curse or Steam) I would pay 1-2 bucks for premium mods and/or mod packages that work perfectly. I pay for premium apps on my phone why wouldn't I here. And no I don't work for EA.

Oh sure, Lets make money with our mod so user can now use the "I paid for it" argument. I will sure be trilled to deal in my free time with the same entitled childlike behavior I already have to deal with at work.

Yeah, I have a day job and I don't want to turn my hobby into a job.

And most users can't be bothered to donate even a tiny amount, so why would they pay ?
