Calibrating the navball (or Control from Here from launch)

Recommended Posts

I have a Munar lander that I'm working on. All the windows face horizontally. I have a dock at the top for attaching to my space station and other craft. I should very much like to have my navball not be 90° off all the time.

The catch is, I'm launching it inside a fairing, so I can't click Control From Here. And frankly, it's kinda silly that I'd have to! Is there a way to simply rotate the navball so up is up?

Just scroll the mouse wheel and zoom in on the fairing till your camera clips through it. Then right click on the docking port. Your bigger problem is going to be landing IVA I'm afraid. I assume that's why you went with all the cupolas. The navball in there will reorient to the cupola pod always.

One step Alashain intended to say but missed, the sentence "Then right click on the docking port." should read something like "Then right click on the docking port, and click control from here."

I went with the cupolas cuz they look cool from the outside. They make sense to use as an IVA for the lander and I was hoping to do that, but to be honest, this is my first Münar landing with such a big object (I already landed a probe) and I'm gonna do it the easy way, looking from the outside.

Both these suggestions are good. Thanks! I think I can save my (frankly quite complex) lander as a subassembly, then start with a port and reattach it all.

Kludgey workarounds aside, I still would like to be able to set what part should be controlled from in the VAB.

Sadly it doesn't seem to be the root part, and is instead the first part placed. It is not always easy to just rebuild your ship around the new capsule you realize you want to control from.

In 1.0+, hidng parts in fairings are availalbe in the stock game... At least this workaround still works... (I haven't tried it on a probe core inside a service module inside a fairing, which also seems possible now...)

(I have a multi-payload vehicle in a fairing and it took one of the sub-vehicle's pod as the control point, with the probe core that is intended for the first few stages hidden away...)

A nice way to do it would be to allow the "control from here" for the VAB or SPH, preferably with some indication on each possible control point whether it is default or not... (Having priorities might be useful for a vehicle with sub-vehicles) (Although adding it as an option in action groups will also help..)
