Hmm I wonder... Was the 'very accurate, 100% legit' copy of the Moon visit-able or not, no matter if it was a placeholder?

if you mean the mun in 0.2 then yes it was. :)

...irrelevant side note.  Am I the only one whose immediate reaction on reading the thread title was, "The five stages of KSP"?

  1. Denial:  "There's no problem.  That was a fluke.  I can totally land this.  F9."
  2. Anger:  "What the hell?!  No WAY!  That's gotta be a program bug.  I figured out the dV THREE TIMES before I started this mission!  I fly this thing for hours and get to this?!"
  3. Bargaining:  "Maybe I can still pull it out.  I can... um... transfer all the fuel to the left side and jettison the right side... and... um..."
  4. Depression:  "Stupid KSP.  Stupid ship.  I can't land the stupid lander.  Because I'm stupid.  Why do I even bother."
  5. Acceptance:  "Well, I guess it happens.  I'll tweak the design and launch it again."

...sorry.  We now return you to your actual thread topic, already in progress.

This is really what I was driving at. Even in the last Squadcast Maxmaps was going on about how female Kerbals would be just as "disposable" as the males. It's this sort of reinforcement of the callous disregard for the characters in the game, and the furtherance of disaster as laudable in social media (while I still "liked" KSP on Facebook) that is harmful to the game.

Just my opinion. The whole "LOLSOKERBAL" thing just makes me sad.

I agree, the release video for Kerbal Space Program, where Valentina and the gang were horrible killed because Sandwich Kermin choose not to put a parachute in the parachute really rubbed me the wrong way.

I mean, I don't mind wacky antiques, ex: First Kerbal in space experience a decoupler failure because it was attached backwards, during reentry and get's rattled around and panics, First EVA spacewalk to test the spacesuit results in the Kerbal's spacesuit comically ballooning up and tries to reenter the spacecraft but gets stuck since he can no longer fit back into the hatch of his spacecraft, First docking of two spacecraft is immediately interrupted by a malfunctioning thruster that spins the spaceship hard and uses up all the monopropellent, the Kerbal pilot hits an emergency release that opens up a comparment full of barf bags.  These are just just minor parodies of what actually happened during the space race, and when abridged and done with the Kerbals, it could genuinely be funny in my opinion.

Yyyyyyyeah, the "shuttle launch goes wrong and everyone dies horribly" promo video hit a little too close to home for my taste. I much prefer the ones in which something goes comically wrong rather than tragically wrong... or better yet, the ones where something starts to go disastrously wrong but thanks to ingenuity, a firm grasp of orbital physics, and highly skilled flying, the day is saved. (Several of Nassault's cinematics fit the bill quite well.)

I'm serious when I play career mode, and blowing up a rocket or a building is nowhere near funny to me, it is actually very frustrating, because it is a lot of money to repair, experienced kerbals that give me a higher yield of science, or have advanced controls die, and I fail a mission, which costs and is time consuming.

KSP does make me laugh and explosions are fun, but I actually hate losing Kerbals, especially the "trio". I too did the "wee, 'splosions are fun :D" thing at first, but now I try to more constructive things and rarely play sandbox mode anymore. I prefer Science career, good middleground between sandbox and caree mode to me.

And yes, when I first saw the thread title I thought it would be about the 5 stages of KSP addiciton or something.^_^

Where can I find the download links for these wonderful relics? Or are they lost in the void where the kraken hath consumeth them forever?

All versions prior to 0.7.3 were never released so none of us has any access to it. And all after 0.13.3 are illegal to distribute, But everything in between is available from:

Yeah, I really value my Kerbals. After I unlock probe cores with SAS, I stop using kerbals entirely, they're too precious.

Better than I expected, I was thinking more along the lines of the KSP devs getting into strange shapes and deep themes hidden in the rocket parts, making KSP so meta it starts a new branch of philosophy, guiding humankind to its True PurposeTM.

I like your thinking.

Meh, it was April fools anyway ._.

Here's how I would divide them:

Inspiration era - HarvestR experiments with model rocketry and writes the kerbo Log.

Pre-KSP era - pre 0.1 versions.

Early KSP - 0.1-0.7.3. The foundation for the game, and the first public release.

Early-Middle KSP - 0.7.3 - 0.13.3. Continues building the foundation for more stuff - saving vessels, symmetry, the Mun, etcetera.

Middle KSP - 0.14. Vessel persistence. Very important.

The Golden age, early - 0.15. The golden age brings massive updates with awesome stuff. Rotating parts, spaceplanes.

The Golden age, middle - 0.16. 2.5m rocket parts and EVA.

The Golden age, late - 0.17. IVA and planets, along with an amazing amount of polish.

The Last Golden age - 0.18. Arguably the biggest update in KSP in terms of features. Docking, Maneuver nodes, better map mode, probes, electricity, the resources tab, and a ton of other features that would take me half an hour to say.

Early modern KSP - 0.19 - 0.21. Rovers, seats, flag planting, and Linux! Completely redesigned space center. Also, the astronaut complex.

Modern KSP - 0.22 - 0.90 - Tons of cool stuff! Career and Science modes, 3m parts, and asteroids!

Recent KSP - 1.0 - 1.1.3 - KSP continues to grow! 64 bit, destructible stuff, mining, and more!

The Future - ????

That's kind of how you start career mode or science mode, you get the basic pod, the basic engine, some trash bins full of boom, and that's really it.

I'm sure there's a mod for the nostalgia part skins if you really want them.
