  1. Oh yes, this planet was VERY hard to get into orbit around. Basically during my approach, Hale was catching up to me, so I started to increase my velocity to match it before encounter. It was difficult, I had to try it over several times, life support lasted me but it was tough.
  2. So I just landed on Hale, a moon that is part of the outer planets mod pack. VERY HARD moon to get to, enormously low gravitational influence, my CM orbiting the moon also collided into a mountain while I was descending in my lander. Now my Kerbal has to get back to the mothership under it's own limited consumables (including life support). I don't think Errik Kerman minds so much though, he got an awesome photograph!
  3. What's the stupid name you have given to one of your vessels/ships/probes in KSP? I was looking through all the ships I've designed in the past year and some of them have some pretty ridiculous names (most of which I cannot post here because they are slightly suggestive). Does anybody got any good safe-for-forums ones they can share?
  4. I like to orbit AT LEAST 80km. Mainly for docking purposes, if you have to slow your orbit to catch up with your target and you are in the 70km zone, there's a chance you could accidentally deorbit your craft!
  5. Don't forget colors, geographical locations, sci fi characters, and astrology signs.
  6. How are you supposed to get in orbit around Hale? I am on my second voyage, I come in at around 450 m/s and when I decelerate to get into orbit, the moon like zings me off ahead of it it's orbit. This moon is really bizarre, it's also not giving me a PE in its encounter. I've tried this a dozen times trying to match it's velocity a head of time, I can't get into orbit!
  7. Hey everyone, I kind of want to start a new game on KSP... in particular, I wanted to start a new science game as I am getting tired of the career and monetary limitations. But I want to keep on my landing sites/flags I planed on all moons. They have a special meaning to me, I date them all. I don't care about ships/debris but I want to save my flags. Anyone know if this is possible or a tool exist to do it? I've tinkered with gamesaves before, but haven't tried this.
  8. +1. Sorry OP, I know it's annoying, but the game gets frequently updated and is still in the beta phase even now. You should be happy the developers at least consistently update the game and aren't abandoning it. The most you can do, build new ships and start from the beginning.
  9. Okay, so I'm a working man, turning 25 next month. I have a pretty busy life which involves working full time, finishing college, and doing everything else in life. I love KSP, but when it comes down to it, this game is getting too time consuming for my life anymore. This game involves too many activities which sometimes require me to be attentive to the game for long periods of time, testing and waiting for things to slowly happen. The bottom line... I personally feel SQUAD needs to do a few things to increase the overall pacing of this game. Does anyone else agree or have any ideas on how to improve this? I don't know... I am going to one of the outer planets right now and it's taken me nearly four days to assemble my interstellar ship and try to fly there. So many aspects of this game are getting boring/time consuming. I just want to go to the planets and visit the moons. I like the building rockets part but parts of this game are getting a bit time consuming for me.
  10. Being a developer myself, I personally think Squad will NEVER abandon KSP. This game is way too huge and successful to just dump. People love KSP, it has gained very big attention. I DO NOT think KSP will ever get a "sequel". We can dream of a "KSP" sequel with CryEngine graphics but that will probably never happen. I DO think they will continuously update this game. New parts, graphical and physics improvements, new planets, new places, I'm sure it is all coming. This game is also so hardwired into the mod community that even if SQUAD left, it would still live on. I personally do not think SQUAD will make another game either; as some of you said, they are a marketing company more. But who knows; I think they should but it will have to be very interesting and fun.
  11. Hmm, maybe you are overthinking this game a bit! First of all, have you got to the Mun and Minmus? You should set a personal goal for yourself; you should try to land on both the Mun and Minmus a combination of 15 times. Each time you go, try a different design to get there, try different rockets, lander cans, landing legs, engines, and other part combinations to see what works best. Become a master at building basic rockets, basic spaceflight, and lunar landings. The next phase - practice interplanetary travel! Build various unmanned probes and send them en route to Duna. Practice getting them as close to the planet as possible and getting into a proper orbit. Practice brining some of them back to Kerbin. Once you get the hang of the orbital mechanics of interplanetary travel, try sending a single Kerbal to orbit duna. Don't attempt to land them but let them do some orbital observation. Once you get good at this, design a rocket/lander that you think could land on Duna and take off. Make it one that could carry a Kerbal, but DON'T bring a Kerbal to Duna yet. Instead, attach a remote guidance unit or Stayputnik to the craft and attempt a Duna landing and takeoff unmanned. If you crash, you only lose an unmanned ship. We are doing the same thing as humanity right now; we've sent dozens upon dozens of rovers to Duna, some failed, others dramatically succeeded (like Curiosity). You could send probes, but if you are aiming for manned missions, I suggest using the actual ship designs that will take them there and back. Have fun with the game now; you are only a noob once! I miss the days of not knowing what all the planets were like in this game and practicing the basics. Send tons and tons of unmanned probes. Master the game with them first, and then advance on to Kerbals. And as others here have said, watch YouTube videos. Many people have posted various ways to get to Duna. Duna is the easiest planet to get to, you can aerobrake on it and it is very easy to land and return compared to some other planetary bodies in the game.
  12. Yes, it is another one of "those" post... I was just on another thread that was talking about KSP's impact in the world and in real life space travel and that got me thinking... is there ANY women out there that play Kerbal Space Program? Seriously, if there is ever a more male-dominated video game in the world, this got to be it. Other games you come across or hear from females even on the forums. I don't think in all my time playing this game have I ever seen a women post on these forums. Unless their username wasn't conspicuous. None on YouTube, none on Twitch, none on Reddit, none on here. There are female scientist and astronauts out there. I am curious who is enthusiastic about this game of the opposite gender. So without ado... are you a girl gamer who plays KSP? (cricket_soundeffect.wav)
  13. Interesting post, OP. I know we all love this game so much and learned a lot from it, but at the end of the day, it's JUST a video game. It is not 100% accurate to actual orbital concepts and it is built in a way that you don't quiet learn the math behind space travel as much as the basic mechanics. BUT... it does make somewhat of an impact. Here is how I think KSP is impacting real space travel: 1) inspiring kids (13 and under) - this game is inspiring kids today that could potentially pursue a career in engineering, space, and science. Remember, kids today maybe the first ones to walk on Mars and beyond. Imagine the first human to ever walk on Mars in 20-30 years could VERY much be there because they played KSP when they were growing up and were inspired to pursue the real thing. This would be such a huge, momentous moment for the video game community as well as humanity for the first steps on another world. This is the number one reason why I play and support this game, and I also show it to kids I know. 2) It is inspiring undergrads and high school students - I am a college IT student myself and I am sure there are people in the aerospace division that love this game and got inspired by it. 3) Media - I made a post several weeks ago, I caught NASA using a clip of KSP in one of it's promotional videos. KSP is being used as a go-to simulator for quick screenshots and grabs of spaceflight tech. Not a bad victory for KSP at all. 4) Spacecraft Design - People that played this game both young and old in the industry may be inspired to use some of it's design. From actual rocket parts/designs to the very convenient nav ball, I can see parts of this game being used in real life application. Simple spacecraft design works the best. 5) Educational use - some education institutions use KSP as a learning tool. What this game is NOT doing or ever going to do: 1) Become a Simulator - KSP is not a "simulator" perse, it is a game made for fun and it does not match real world physics and Kerbin is not "Earth". With that being said, real simulators may be very loosely based off of it. 2) Teach real world space flight - as I said above, this game does the basics but there is a lot more to orbital mechanics. This game does not teach the math or science behind chemical or nuclear rockets. Actually, this game is EXTREMELY ELEMENTARY compared to real rocket science. Real life is a different ball game. It takes thousands of brilliant engineers working thousands of man hours collectively to build spacecrafts and hundreds of millions of dollars. Only the best of the best, extremely qualified professionals work for NASA. They are even strict on janitorial jobs. That's about it! Some of you others made some great points as well about this game not making that big of an impact yet. KSP is a niche appeal; it appeals to people who love aeronautics and space flight. If you are not a fan of that genre of video game, you probably won't like KSP. You probably won't like it either if you are not a hardcore gamer. KSP is an indie game and doesn't quite have the theatrics as big budget mainstream games.
  14. Ladies and gentleman, I present to you the OFFICIAL sequel to the smash hit blockbuster "Gravity"... Gravity 2: The Green Sunrise Coming soon to select theaters
  15. That pod looks amazing, you got to finish it asap! Do want!
  16. Hello all, I've been having some problems with the ALCOR lander since 0.9, I am playing in 32 bit on Windows. This keeps happening, I've completely deleted all my mods relating to ALCOR and it is reoccuring. The raster prop monitor IS working in other vehicles, but not the ALCOR pod. Any ideas? I love this mod, but I also love IVA which was kind of the point, and right now the IVA is broken, is there a patch for this coming or what?
  17. Well my manned voyage to Sarnus just finished last night! I wanted to land on Slate last but it scared me... when I got in orbit, my orbital velocity was over 2,500 m/s. If I'm not mistaken, this world is similar to Tylo. I'm gonna have to pack a very powerful lander to touch down on this world. Just to get back into orbit I would need a tremendous amount of velocity. I did orbital experiments instead and then ditched! I got lucky there, because I only had one day of life support when I rendezvoused for my main ship in orbit around Sarnus! If I made a scheduled landing, then one of my kerbals would have had to get a burial in Sarnus's orbit! My lander now is a modified version I made for Tylo, I'm gonna do an unmanned landing first and see how things go. Nice moon though, good work on the detailed landscape.
  18. Wow, I'm glad everyone got a kick out of my KSP find on NASA TV! Imagine my surprise. I fell asleep and my PC to my TV as a monitor, for a split second when I woke up I thought I had kSP running in the background until I noticed it was part of the NASA TV promo. This is probably not the last time we will see KSP make the media again! One of you asked about the program, DirecTV list everything on NASA TV as a "video file". It was one of their promos about future rocket designs with a narrator talking over it. It wasn't anything super special, a five second clip of KSP, but still wonderful to see as a KSP fan. I watch NASA TV about once-twice a week. They put a lot of repetitive programming on after a while, but usually once a week you can get the latest on what they are doing. Oh, and you people going on about the copyright stuff. In case some of you forgot, NASA is in collaboration with KSP and SQUAD. The 2.5M parts and asteroids were added when NASA gained interest in KSP. They even gave them permission to use the NASA meatball logo in the game. It probably works both ways. I don't work for SQUAD, but I'm sure they are beyond happy with NASA using their game for publicity and probably had an agreement about that stuff in the past. And this was a very short clip, under 5 seconds, there are copyright laws out there stating you are allowed to use a clip of a song/game/movie for under five seconds or something without copyright infringement. I'm surprised anyone is even making an issue of that. I'm just happy NASA supports this game. We need our future generations enthusiastic about science and space exploration if we ever want to go beyond lame low-Earth orbit experiments and space stations, we need people who love space travel.
  19. I just made it to Ovak, it's extremely low G environment actually made it a unique challenge to get into orbit, I almost smashed into the moon and then almost blew out of it's sphere of influence! It's kind of ironic actually. I retired my main interstellar ship/tugboat, it was a massive rocket with tons of fuel tanks I used originally for Jool 5. I redesigned my setup to have a small "apollo" style carrier to ferry my lander around to the Moons once I arrived at Sarnus in a bigger ship. That was a good call because I wouldn't have been able to shed velocity fast enough for the tiny gravity of Ovak with my older ship design! Note I am playing this to the extreme right now; multi-year missions I require a "habitat" for the Kerbals so they have a place to live and I'm also using life support. Definitely a challenge given Sarnus's distance from Kerbin, had to pack about 7,000 days worth for food and use O2 and H2O recyclers. Looking forward to landing on the other moons.
  20. Anyone download the outter gas planets mod yet? I just landed on "Ovak". I have to say, you could probably get in and out of orbit of this moon with a leaf blower the gravity is so stupendously low...
  21. ... I actually don't think an SSTO for Eve is impossible. Hypothetically I think it could be done... it would be a super massive nightmare trying to get it to Eve and landing it in the right spot, but I don't think it's impossible... I've done the numbers on it a couple times. Also, some of you said it's impossible to land on Kerbol and Jool... that's actually not true. There are videos on youtube of people landing on and planting flags on both, although it is mostly glitchy and bugged. Your'e not really supposed to land on either but it IS possible. Things that are impossible off the top of my head, I think there are some obvious ones in this game... 1) Landing/returning from most planets using on ion engine(s) - they simply do not have the TWR to do this, no matter how many you would build 2) De-orbiting moons/planets - it is impossible like others here said. Not only does the game not allow it in it's engine (they have a hard programmed course), but it would require a stupendous amount of rocket power (something like millions to the million power) pounds of thrust just to de-orbit Gilly, the smallest moon in the game. Scott Manley did a video on this with the numbers. 3) achieve the speed of light - in the games stock engine, it is impossible to achieve the speed of light. Again Scott Manley did a video on this as well a while ago. 4) Achieve orbit using only a single sepratron launch - basically anything that would launch you up in one burst would not be enough to put you into orbit. It's impossible according to Newtonian (and kerbal) physics. Eventually your orbit would need circularized. I can't think of anything else at the moment. But there are some obvious ones.
  22. Wrong. Okay this is going off topic of the planets plugin, but for the love of god, installing Linux is not the answer to everything for this game. I am someone that works professionally with Linux and UNIX for many years, I even went to college and learned UNIX. I tried Linux with KSP and my experience was downright awful. Ubuntu is not the answer to everything for KSP. I installed the Linux version of KSP and if anything, I had more problems with it than the windows including but not limiting to: - problems installing graphical drivers to run games on linux, and even having to install hacks to force my game to use anti aliasing - mods crashing - other random graphical issues - a problem where I basically couldn't pan the camera correctly - not being able to right click on parts I finally quit KSP on Linux when my game completely vanished and deleted itself from Linux on Steam for no apparent reason. I lost all my save/progress on that, luckily I had it backed up on Windows. Unless you know Linux really well and/or are willing to spend several days learning it yourself (Linux is MUCH different than Windows and if you don't like terminal you're gonna have a bad time) and potentially risking all of the above problems I have had, installing Linux just for KSP is not really worth it. I recommend this instead if you are having memory issues: 1) Installed texture manager the mod. There are different ways to set it up and it can drastically reduce RAM usage. 2) Use less mods. Don't complain cause you can't use hundreds of mods. I'm sure there are ones you don't utilize that often. Especially turn off the ones that improve the visuals. I only use the skybox one, clouds and atmospheres kill KSP and the game looks pretty nice stock already IMO. 3) Try running the game in OpenGL. There are launch parameters to start the game in Open GL instead, which is said to save up to a couple gigs of RAM for some people.
  23. I woke up from an afternoon nap and had NASA TV just now. They had on a serious clip/film talking about the rocket designs of the future, showing actual rocket parts in the manufacturing processes and etc. then all of a sudden it included five second clip of this particularly interesting looking "futuristic rocket" zipping out of the atmosphere. I rewinded it and took a picture. Yes, it is what you think it is and yes, they actually used it for an official NASA video:
  24. Well just arrived at "Sarnus". Tediously long voyage but worth the trip! We're gonna need a faster time warp for some of these planets (I know there are some mods out there for that already I believe). On a side note, I'm surprised so many people are upset with the moving of Eeloo. I like i t's new spot, seems more realistic to me, more like "Pluto" even though it was moreso supposed to be a Europa analog in design I believe. Well this year we will find out what Pluto looks like when New Horizons gets there! Didn't risk aerobraking but I'm gonna try it on the next orbit, I'm assuming it works... love the scale of the planet, stock KSP definitely has too small of planets, Sarnus is nice and huge, love the rings. Thanks again guys for making this mod. Looking forward to the moons.
  25. Sweet, you guys are active on the forums, thanks for answering questions about the moons. It's nice you guys are focusing on QUALITY over quantity and not trying to just recreate worlds already in the game (like Eve). I wanted to share with everyone (if this wasn't already posted), I've been figuring out the orbits for the planets. So far here is what your burn trajectory should look like for Sarnus, similar to Jool, 2500~ m/s change in velocity to achieve this orbit: Note, I am doing this voyage with TAC life support now, we'll see if my three-man Kerbal crew survives the trip!
