What was you first contact with internet?
sedativechunk replied to Pawelk198604's topic in The Lounge
I got my first computer in 1997-ish when I was only 7 years old (and man was excited when we got it!). I am now majoring in IT and work on computers everyday as a programmer, I grew up in an era where PCs were an amazing thing introduced to homes and I appreciate them being in our lives whereas kids today now have portable iPads and all the wonders of 2015. I think we got internet probably that year or soon after, I'm gonna say 1998 at the earliest, 1999 at the latest. We had AOL back then with 56k dial up. It took me about 10-15 seconds to sign on the internet with those crazy dial up sound effects that used to play when connecting that OP posted in the first topic. I do miss that sound... the only game I ever played online successfully back then was "Age of Empires II", and it was VERY laggy. I remember once also downloading the trailer for Star Wars: The Phantom Menace. It took me about eight hours to download the entire thing, I will never forget that day in my life as a child. I sat there for 8 hours waiting for that thing to download! I don't remember my first time signing on but I do recall I went on there quite frequently... I got broadband around 2005, I couldn't wait for it at the time (so I could play Halo 2) but I miss the old old days of dial up! AOL homepage, AIM, those funny sound effect discussion boards. I am 25 now, and I feel old because of how much I have seen technology change! Kids today have it SO lucky and easy. I had to wait 8 hours to watch a trailer. Now we can stream entire movies in high definition. Gameboys, I had the pocket which didn't even have a color screen yet, and the only way I played with friends is if they came over and we used a system link cable! There were no iPads or even portal MP3's yet. I didn't even get a CD player until 2000 or so, and soon after that's when iPods first came out. No wifi, no broadband, no HD TV's, no cell phones, no flat screen screens (yet), no online gaming like there is today. I always want to live to be 100 at least to see the world change and when I do, I want to spread the stories of the "golden age" of the internet and computers. I bet things are going to only change even more in the future. Oh, as an IT professional I'm also making a prediction. I am going to say within 20-30 years quantum computers are going to replace our silicon-based world we live in. iPad technology is going to be dirt cheap to produce and we will have such things as disposable tablets (like on Star Trek). I also am predicting that there will be advancements in quantum mechanics, allowing us to communicate and send data at speeds faster than light. -
I use the docking mode...

Do you think Sandbox Mode can still be rewarding?
sedativechunk replied to Draconiator's topic in KSP1 Discussion
I personally play Science mode. Sandbox is a bit too lose, where the science is the main premise of the game, you go to places to explore and learn. The only thing is, once you have so much science there is nothing to unlock anymore. Sometimes I wish they would rework the science gamemode a bit. -
My KSP is stable for the most part. Believe it or not, I am running 64 bit KSP with like 10-15 mods installed. I must be the only person in the world that DOESN'T have any problems with KSP 64 bit. I have less crashes and problems running it than the standard 32 bit version. I think the normal memory limit of this game is insultingly low with 32 bit, and I'm tired of hearing about Unity being the blame in general. At this point I think SQUAD should find a work around considering how mod-oriented this game is. Furthermore I've tried Linux with this game and had even more problems on there. I don't think changing OS's is a valid excuse/reason for the memory limitations, either. My only problems with 64 bit are the following: 1) Time warp crashing - need I say more? The game crashes sometimes when using the regular time warp feature. 2) Switching vessel problems - When I switch vessels, sometimes my game will randomly go to a random piece of debris instead of to the actual main vessel the part came off of. Really weird (and slightly) annoying problem, only happens in 64 bit for me. 3) Missing textures/gaps on planets - sometimes the planets will randomly get giant grey blobs on them while in orbit. This maybe related to a mod but it only seems to happen in 64 bit. Besides this, there is still one general problem I think SQUAD kind of sidetracks (or maybe even doesn't know about). Has anyone here ever tried to land in a body of water and then take off from it? For my first trips to Laythe, I landed a floating ship in the water of low mass that mostly used jet engines. It's probably the most efficient craft I've ever built (it was also pretty cool because it cloud land in water!). Well, KSP gets confused with this, and not just on Laythe but Kerbin and Eve as well. If you take a ship off (fly) from a body of water, the game things the ship is still "splashed down". The games engine gets messed up and it doesn't show a proper apoapsis or anything. It still thinks the vessel is on the ground/terrain. I also can't quicksave in this state because the game things I am "moving over terrain". The only way to save and show my orbit is for the kerbal to get out of the ship. And if he bumps the ship, it almost immediately removes all his velocity. I've tried everything, renaming the ship, changing the type, getting in and out of the ship, even tried to manipulate the save file. You CANNOT land a ship in water and take off. And this is a problem IMO, in a game where players (like me) may actually want to build ships that land and take off from bodies of water. It is a pretty serious bug in the game and i don't think a lot of people encounter it, but I wish SQUAD would notice it and fix it.

Hey KSP fans, Not sure if there is a sub forum (did post it on the calendar) but I decided randomly to stream my KSP now, I am attempting my second ever landing on Tylo now. I am doing the "Jool 5" challenge unofficially (meaning I don't care about submitting it for a forum reputation it's just my own personal attempt at landing on all moons for the second time). I got almost 700 hours on this game and I been thinking about doing streaming/videos. Anyone is bored you can watch (no commentary, just the game window)... if not I'll save it to Twitch at least for later watching: http://www.twitch.tv/sedativechunk Thanks!

What planet (or moon) do you have the worst time landing on?
sedativechunk replied to Columbia's topic in KSP1 Discussion
I've mastered Tylo. That is a piece of cake. Eve on the other hand... -
Ugh, this thread almost looks like it's turning into a flame war between a few people... here is my take that should be an end all to the arguments on here. 1) There is nothing wrong with adding female kerbals to the game. 2) It makes perfect sense to have female kerbals in the same, in fact it's kind of weird that there isn't. 3) Some of you are bringing up the topic of females playing KSP. Yes, women play KSP, I've started a thread about it and it went into oblivion. The bottom line, they do play, and whether they play or not there still is nothing wrong with female kerbals.

Taking the "Kerbal way" a little too far in the real world.
sedativechunk replied to NecroBones's topic in The Lounge
Wow man, glad you are OK. I live in PA and hit some ice yesterday in my truck. I've had many close calls but fortunately never had an accident. I hate the weather around here and would like to move some day. -
Scott Manley showcases everything I find wrong with FAR
sedativechunk replied to foxkill2342's topic in KSP1 Discussion
I never even tried FAR once, don't really care for it TBH. I can see this mod being done away with when SQUAD changes the atmospheric effects in KSP in 1.0. -
OP, I only skimmed over your post briefly. If I were you, I would start benching your GPU outside of KSP; I highly recommend you download 3D Mark, it's free except if you want the more advanced leaderboard versions and things. Run it contiuously and see how your GPU holds up. If it starts crashing and/or having issues, it's very possible your graphics card is bad. Check for all the stupid things first, eg. is it seeded properly, cables hooked good, updated drives, etc. if you rule out everything else, then your graphics card is probably busted.

The stages of ksp (Looking back on our favorite game.)
sedativechunk replied to daniel l.'s topic in KSP1 Discussion
Wow, I never seen the 0.1 screenshots that far back, thanks for sharing. A flat Kerbin with blue space! I did in fact play the first free version of KSP but I never seen anything even older than that. I guess the game had to start somewhere! It too find the sidebar interesting to say the least. With that being said, it seems kind of intrusive and covers a good portion of the screen. -
I've never tried KSP with a flight stick but I have played with them on other games and typically I hate them. I think flightsticks are far behind mouse/keyboard precision and technology.
-
I've done 12,000 m/s returning from Jool once. If you are playing with deadly reentry, don't try those speeds!

Do you use the launch escape system?
sedativechunk replied to montyben101's topic in KSP1 Discussion
Yes, I do use them about 75% of the time. Usually in all my manned flights, if it's not a shuttle launch but a crew capsule (not lander, I always put those up separately) I always use one, and they have proven to be useful. I always program them and a separator to save the kerbals if things go bad. Once I break about 50km I program all escape towers to eject with my action sequence 10. Also, because the aerodynamics model is getting reworked, I have been using them to jettison nose cone sections and things once I break orbit to save mass, they are VERY useful for things like this. Overall, it depends on the type of ship and use. Also, this is in interesting topic for another reason. Let's talk escape towers in reality. I once heard that the Apollo escape/abort system was useless. They said if something actually went bad, that system would have not been able to react in time to it. It was more so there as a political statement to show they didn't want to kill astronauts. The systems did work, it's just they didn't have a chance of actually saving astronauts. Anyone here of this? On the other hand, in the 80's on a Russian Soyuz I believe and escape tower DID save astronauts from a dangerous situation. I heard it propelled them to some super high g-force and scared the crap out of the astronauts. Maybe the 80's had better technology for rockets/computer systems for the abort sequences, but I did hear the Apollo one's weren't that great. -
When I first started playing I would constantly run out of fuel and use the fuel cheat. But that is heresy now, I never use it to cheat anymore. Only if I want to test designs, sometimes the gravity hack is extremely useful for testing crafts out before going through all the trouble of getting them into orbit.

OP, you are preaching to the choir. Many people have bashed the new career mode for everything you said (including myself). Although the pilot thing is somewhat annoying, it doesn't make the game impossible to play though.

Greath Minmus Fracture
sedativechunk replied to CCCP's topic in KSP1 Technical Support (PC, modded installs)
Looks like a mild texturing problem, Minmus I have seen have more texture problems than other worlds. Are other places doing it or just Minmus? I wouldn't worry about it too much. -
KSP is definitely not dying. You're talking about community and blog post, let me tell you something. Years ago when this game was first picking up heat, the developers were probably more pro-active in the advertising front. now that this game is popular, they don't have to do quite as much to keep it rolling including writing on blogs. Also, the game is not even officially "finished" yet, it just entered the beta stage. When it gets released as a full game, prepare for a massive surge of new players and interest in the game, they will probably do some advertising to promote the full release as "Steam" will probably even feature it as a full release. And lastly, this game, honestly these forums are more pro-active than some full retail video games, one big one being Crysis 3. I loved that game, but it's online community (especially on PC) is pathetically small these days that it's kind of not even worth playing anymore.

I am saddened by this but, I'm getting bored.
sedativechunk replied to LostElement's topic in KSP1 Discussion
We do not talk about those kinds of things here. -
^ This. Kerbals do not speak except for in the career missions building Gene Kerman makes strange sounds.

[1.1.2] Kerbin-Side (v1.1.0) & Supplements
sedativechunk replied to AlphaAsh's topic in KSP1 Mod Releases
Can I just say, I ran across this mod on Scott Manley's page and... I THINK IT'S AWESOME! It crashed on me once but once I put the game in 64 bit it is running smoother. I LOVE launching from the polar complex, so fun flying over those super high mountains, almost makes KSP feel like a new game without seeing the same old generic scenery when Kerbin is such a massive place with so many biomes.- 2,488 replies

OMG, toadicus, you the man for reviving this mod. I hate the wobbling docking ports in this game so much it almost made me quit playing, it's VERY annoying. I just used your quantum struts continued mod with one of the tiny docking ports from the tantares and it works amazing. You sir are getting a donation tomorrow.

My girlfriend just surprised me with a KSP themed birthday
sedativechunk replied to JordanL's topic in KSP1 Discussion
+1. Women are hard to come by. I don't know your situation personally but if she went to those extremes for your birthday she must really care about you, you should put a ring on it soon. -
It should be without quotations, just -force-opengl. With that being said, I am also on Windows 8.1 with a high end ATI graphics card the HD7950, OpenGL causes my game to flicker and it only shows one fourth of the screen, it used to work. You can try it, if it doesn't work you are out of luck.
