A small addition to biomes.

Recommended Posts

For the purposes of temperature and atmosphere science collection, I would like it if day and night would be considered distinct biomes, creating a second opportunity to take those readings at the same landing site. While not an essential tweak, this would make the appropriate science instruments more valuable, and give the player a reason to do more than just land a probe and make two recordings of each instrument, then abandon the probe forever.

Personally I don't see the need to further break down geomes (a word eventually to be adopted into exoplanetology! Woo! I'm contributing to science!) into discreet subsets based on day/night cycles. It feels a wee bit like science mining, and I personally am not a big fan of the science grind. That said, it ultimately wouldn't bother me either way.

IMHO a less grindy way would be if they gave us contracts for probes that are built to collect and transmit data over extended periods of time. The idea being that we build a probe capable of operating continuously with the specified science bits aboard and the capability to transmit every hour or something (likely being a simple power requirement rather than actually transmitting) and then plop it on the biome the contract specifies. The reward would include a science bump and some cash, I would imagine, in addition to the standard science collected for visiting there.

In KSP the concept of day and night only happens because the "day" side is under light and the "night" side is in shadows. for biomes to give different amounts of science i believe they would have to be rewritten.

I think, if possible, the OPs idea should probably not work for every instrument. The thermometer is an obvious candidate for where it should work, but all the others are upto debate. I am not an environmental scientist, so i cant tell, for example, if there are siginificant pressure differences to be expected from any body´s day side to the some body´s night side, for example (atmophere provided, of course).

The goo container and the materials bay are special candidates concerning this, and maybe their SCI-output should not depend on ´biome´ (please Squad, again, check your terminology) at all, but rather on parameters like temperature and pressure (and g-force). This means, that they would have to be ´behind´ the thermo-/baro-/accelerometer in the tech tree, cause their application would depend on prior readings of said parameters. If you already have a goo-reading at temp/pres/accel x, y and z, there is nothing new to be learned from doing it again under the same conditions, no matter where you take the data. Knowing said parameters first, would then be a requirement to actually use the goo-container (to full effect, at least). OTOH, you´d be able to change these parameters (yielding new science from the goo, once you have measured said parameters under the situation) in novel ways: To change g, simply do a burn. To change T, intentionally overheat the container a bit...

I like this idea. Or have that science bump spread out over time in the same way that the Science Lab does.

^ What Scoundrel said

Don't like the science grinds... landing on the mun once is interesting, building a re-usable lander and station is interesting, but doing more than about 3 landings is just annoying

Temperature and pressure should vary during a day/night cycle, is why I was thinking it would be nice if those did yield different measurements. And I did specify in my suggestion that the idea should only apply to those atmo/temp instruments. And I proposed it not so much to get more science out of it, but to make the use of probes and those science instruments more interesting.

But like I said, it's just a small idea that wouldn't make a big change to the game, and I am not militant about the subject. :D
