Noob question; What is MechJeb?

Recommended Posts

MechJeb is a mod. It add an autopilot that can (amongst other things) execute maneuver nodes for you at the right time, launch into orbit, keep you hovering at a desired altitude.

There are a bunch of youtube tutorials about it, for example:

As it is a PC mod, I don't think that you will be able to get it on PS4.

The PC version of KSP allows things called "mods" -- methods for other programmers to change the way that KSP works. These mods have to be downloaded and added to KSP. MechJeb is a mod.

All the players on here have the PC version, and we do not know how mods work on consoles. We are under the impression that Squad enabled some method for adding mods to the console version of the game, but we do not know what it is. Hopefully Squad provided some instructions somewhere for you -- if you can find them, please let us all know what they say. :D

MechJeb provides a number of tools, some more useful than others:

- Maneuver planner: VERY helpful for calculating transfer windows to other planets.  Also can be used to easily circularize orbits, match planes, etc.

- Rendezvous and Docking Autopilots-   insanely helpful when you get to the point where you want to assemble big things.  But I always advise people to learn to do it manually before using MechJeb to do it for you.

- Ascent Guidance-  meh, I sometimes let it take over the last 30% of a launch flight, I don't like some of the decision it makes (but there are lots of override controls).

- DeltaV planner- shows dV calcs in VAB and in flight.   Also very handy.

Citation please?

My impression was that console players (PS4, XBoxOne) can't use mods.

Therefore, if you're playing on the PS4, the real answer to "what is MechJeb?" is this:

It's an autopilot add-on that you can't use because you're playing on a console.

There is no official modding support at this time for either console, sorry.

A little of topic, but is there a mod like a "Mechjeb Lite"? It would consume less resources and would only have the Maneuver Planner or, at least, a button to execute the next maneuver node...

That feature is fantastic! Iike the others, but this one is invaluable! :)

Keeping this brief because yes, we're kinda off-topic now:  Well, there's BetterBurnTime.  It's not quite what you asked for (won't plan or execute maneuvers for you), but does provide guidance in terms of accurate-burn-time and when-to-start-the burn for three very common and important scenarios:  1. executing a maneuver node, 2. landing on a vacuum world, 3. rendezvous with another vessel in orbit.  And it's pretty lightweight.

...Apologies to the OP, since this is discussing mods, which are unavailable to you if you're a console player.  Anyone who wants to discuss mods further, we should probably take it to another thread.
