modded wheels might be more susceptible to seam glitches

Can't confirm, but it feels that way.  Suppose it's always been that way, but before 1.1, stock wheels were vastly inferior to many stock wheels.  Now, they're pretty good, and that's coming from someone who used to hate the stock wheels.

Sorry if in some pics the flags are not clearly visibly because of my spectator stands (which are placed right next to each flag). They are present in each pic, I could add a highlight to the pics if needed.
Full vids of each drive can be made available (although may take me a while to upload them!)
Each rover was refueled after each stage and moved back to be behind the flag before starting the next stage.

OK, finally managed to complete this. What a course! I had a lot of trouble with the wheels though. They randomly decided to clip off the surface of the ground making the car jump and jank around when stopped which meant I sometimes had to retract some or all of the wheels to get the vehicle at 0 m/s for the screen shots, particularly the last one. Or I had to roll away from the flag a bit to flatter ground.

I rolled a few times which meant either trying to right the craft sideways while it was moving to save time or just shutting off the engine, retracting the wheels and rolling over which wasted time.

Second Stage with the Mad Moose is complete ... Time was 12:09

Thats a damn respectable time for such a monster, I'm almost convinced to do a wheeled version of the ADD  and enter that  too, she'll be 65 tonnes without wheels and power, So do you have a copy of the save with targets available ???

Thanx, the Mad Moose is faster going over a hill as compared to going around it ... Damn tough too as Val has rolled her down the mountain a few times and she keeps on going and shooting after righting herself

My save with targets, Sure ... Here you go: https://www.dropbox.com/s/epr5fj1jk7jxe5n/DAKAR 2017 - START.sfs?dl=0 ... Anyone is welcome to use it

There are 31 targets with their weapon managers set to Team B spread out between the flags as well as a refueling trailer at each flag ... The trailers have no weapon manager so if you wanna blow 'em up you gotta do that by the eye

Dead Bug MK2

Intended as a mixed Propulsion/Electric rover, this machine ended up finishing the run pure electric after knocking off the FART (Fast Acting Reaction Thruster) part of the way into the run.

Would've been my start, but I screwed up the nav-ball, so I wrote it off as a false start and began the timer later.

Finished with "The Kerbinator"

  • It has a top speed of 112 m/s (even higher when going downhill ofc)
  • Its powered by three junos and some big electric wheels to accelerate faster.
  • The tailfin at the back helps it keep its nose forward and not do flatspins on the ground.
  • The spoiler stops spin and gives me control when I am in the air after going over hills together with two 1.25m reactionwheels.
  • It has flaps to stop all the jet engines from burning when in-air.
  • Its controlled in docking mode:
Linear only gives you control over the wheel so i don´t tip over when i hit an unexpected hill.
Rotation is activated by holding space down, its enables me to control reactionwheels and flaps, furthermore it also deploys the flaps to stop the junos
  • And at last... Jeb is the driver:0.0:

The car was tipping forwards when going over hills at this time due to its weight loss as the fuel was burned. This was unexpected so i had to fly a plane out and refuel it. Afterwards i timewarped to day once again.

Just finished the second run with the new truck and the time 00:42:12 and that's it for a while , i don't think i can go faster, maybe if i was 20 years younger . Driving EC only,  requires a different style and any air time is bad, as speed drops dramatically in the air especially with such a light vehicle, so there's a good case for heavier vehicles over light ones, and of course a light one flies easier than a heavy one. I've spread some versions of the wheels around so i reckon in the right hands, with reaction times slightly better than an Oak tree,  a faster time is really possible

Here are my stage times and screens.

A bit of info about the BHS Traxus race truck

Electic/LF-0 Hybird

Added 6 Rhesus  vernier engines to top of motor and 2 at back for added proformance look and Special effects screens but not used in race, they have no real power.

Added 6 OMS Blisters for more control at speed and while jumping, they also provide extra boost.

I carry on board 1 spare tire, 2 CA storage boxes, a CC-R2 connector port for fueling and CA MMU Engineer rack so I would have tools on board. Mechjeb onboard for distance custom info box. May i add that there is a last screen that shows total run info for proof of no cheating or spawning and letting the timer run down for screens.

Stage times

1- 2:51:00 / 2:59:07

2- 3:00;00 / 2:06:45

3- 3:07:00 / 3:16:06

4- 3:17:00 / 3:26:24

5- 3:27:01 / 3:36:30

6- 3:37:00 / 3:46:29

7- 3:47:00 / 3:54:45

Total run time 60 mins. 11 secs.

- You will have to complete 7 stages, timing each using screenshots (press F1, the screenshot will be found in your KSP directory {your KSP install location}/Screenshots/ ) , 2 per stage, showing us the rover near the flag. E.g:

Yeah, but you don't need to nest 14 spoilers. Just put all of them in one spoiler.

Well, good luck guys, this was fun until people started posting ridiculous times... under 5 min stage 1 without flying, and without unbreakable joints? I'm very skeptical... My newest all electric car will do almost 150ms, but keeping it in one piece for the whole thing... ah... next to impossible.

Sorry to hear that as it is totally possible to do stage 1 in under 5 minutes with good driving and a good design ... thing is that the path you take can substantially affect how quickly you finish each stage

My best time in practice runs with stock wheels and 3 Juno's utilizing boost flaps is 5:14 and I know I can improve on that ... and that is with no cheats and only 2 mods, them being BDAc and Roll Cages Rerolled

Speed is definitely good for stage 1, however if your vehicle design can't take punishment then it's going to break apart ... keep practicing and I'm sure you can improve your time

At first I was achieving sub 8 minutes with Bill's Big Bad Beaver but after a bit of practice I managed to shave a little over 2.5 minutes off my time with the same exact vehicle ... so totally possible

I do appreciate where you're coming from here, but as mentioned earlier, a level playing field is not a KSP feature, individuals knowledge and craft building skills swing the balance wildly. In my case the vehicles are built to go as fast as possible and use the Cooper motors ethos of just enough to get the job done and it doesnt matter if it falls apart as it crosses the line.

I cannot achieve anywhere near my times with stock vehicles but I know that should Doc Davinci was to run his original stock vehicle entry then my times would not look so impressive,as I recall he achieved sub 5 min stage 1 times  very early on in testing, which sort of proved that it could be done in the first place.

With electric propulsion you have two things to make sure of, only imo of course , that your wheels are in contact with the ground as much as possible and your vehicle is as light as possible, any air time is wasted time , you cant drive fwd with airborne wheels and don't have the mass benefits of gas powered vehicles.

And i really have no clue as to how many times i tried run 1  dozens is likely , same goes for stages 2-6 i practiced a lot, tuning the route that worked for my vehicle, sometimes the fastest route is not the most direct.

One last thing, on the real Dakar you do not get to see the route track before the day,  if the same had been the case here then none of those awesome times would exist and i reckon many wouldn't have reached the finish in drivable condition
