Replica discussion.

Can't help but notice this is empty. So here's something to start

With the Making History expansion, a bunch of new parts have come out to aid in replicas. Feel free to share/discuss techniques that you have used for making your own. Or own variations even.

I built a replica Saturn V last night. I built it to look right with tank lengths that matched RL and the engines that were emulated. The J2 analog (forget the name) wasn't powerful enough for 5 of them to lift the second stage. I increased to 7 engines and it worked great. Also the Wolfhound is extremely powerful. I recall that the RL engine was also overpowered, but not sure how much.

I ended up with ~10000 delta-v - way too much for a munar mission. The TWRs worked great though...

  • Stage 3 TWR = .65
  • Stage 2 TWR = 1.0 (using 7 engines instead of 5)
  • Stage 1 TWR = 1.2

The J2 analog seems to be under powered. I did the same thing building my Saturn V to look right. Five engines works fine if you dump a bunch of fuel from the stage's and I found I had more than enough TWR to lift a clasic heavy CSM and LEM combo mission. I'm trying this bare stock and had no KER to figure  TWR but I thought the Saturn Would fly fine. And my ridicules N1 clone would explode on the pad! N1 flew flawless fist time. 54 first stage motors lost 6 to fuel feed issue right after launch "didint even feel it Ha" .

So am I the only one who thinks the service module looks to long? clever trick with the three Mk 1s clipped inside.

Yeah, it is def too long.

The stats on the Skiff and the Wolfhound are swapped. Use a single Skiff on the CSM; use five Wolfhounds on the Saturn second stage and one on Saturn's third stage.

Not to mention the added length you get when using 1xTS-25, 1x EP-25, and the full variant of the Wolfhound which has its own 2.5m plate on it.  They add up to be almost as long as a FL-TX220!

LOL...great catch!

You know, I've been defending @SQUAD's decision to charge for DLC. That backing was predicated on them releasing a quality product. I know they were really focused on the Mission Builder, but making parts correctly should be table stakes at this point - they've been doing it for over 5 years. It's a bit disappointing how many "simple" mistakes there are...wrong stats, off-center thrust...

Yes, I like making replica rockets that act in replica ways to recreate historic flights. I have done three replica projects so far with the new Making History parts. The mission write-ups can be found in the Mission Reports section of the forum (link below). So far I have done a Gemini/Agena rendezvous and docking, an Apollo Soyuz Test Project creation, and a Saturn V lunar landing flight:

So the Apollo SM is a little bit long, the Gemini SM is not the right form factor and a couple of the engines have the wrong Isp,  but it still works.  Squad said from the beginning that they were historically inspired parts, not replicas.

Well, it's not that a couple of the engines have the wrong isp; it's that two of the engines have all their stats swapped. Coding error, not design error.
